Blue Fronted Amazon
New owner here, picked up a blue fronted amazon last night. Poor thing is in a cage more suitable to a budgie and didn't have a single toy. So, first mission today is to go get him a nice new big cage so he/she has some room.

Seems very content though and likes climbing to the top of his current dome cage and doing role poly type things. I'm guessing it's all he can do for amusement so toys are also on the list as soon as the kids are dropped off to school.

It doesn't have a name yet either so, I'll have to sort that out. Currently I don't know how tame he is as yet, I can put my hand in ok without getting it bitten so that's a good start and it seems quite quiet.

Will add some pics a bit later.

Welcome and congrat to your new family member. Do you know hes history, how old.........?

He was born June 2011, the person we bought it off got it on the 8th of May as a present but works like 16 hours a day, everyday. So he's about 11months old, no idea of sex but would like to know.

He's healthy enough, spent the last 30mins doing his upside down thing, probably because he's bored. Drinking ok, eating ok.

He has no ring on his leg...not sure what that means?

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the welcomes...just made a short video of him/her....it's been doing this for about 90minutes now. Excuse the cage....we're off to get it a new one in a bit. He came in that and it looks far too small

Hopefully that will work.

Haha that's too funny.lol.

It's worrying, sometimes when it puts his head through its legs it looks like its got himself stuck there....he just sat and chilled for 2 minutes and is now off again....think I might name it bonkers......

Just discovered it doesn't like cats much, saw ours outside on the shed roof and started squawking like mad. The cat came into the lounge, it squawked a few times and the cat legged it....

Welcome to the forum. I've seen zons do that sort of behavior before, it 's more stress related. He may not be happy with the placement of the cage or just the new surroundings.Don't be surprised if he doesn't take to the new cage. It may take a while for him to settle down. Good luck and we'll be around if you have questions.

Hmmm he was doing that when we got him, im thinking its the cage its really small. We are out hunting for a bigger one now.

I will say the cage is way too small for this bird. They need more room in their house!! I would recommend a minimum of 24"x 36"x 48" (bar spacing of 3/4'' to 1''). Please keep in mind that you should always strive for a cage that is as big as your budget and the space in your living area will allow. If you can only get the minimum, make sure to give your Amazon ample out-of-the-cage time each day. Also, never use a cage that will not allow for the bird to fully stretch out its wings. If you are on a strict budget keep looking on Craigs List.

Our CAG did that when we first got him, we thought he was trying to get our attention. He still does it even now when he knows its bedtime. If we dont pay attention to him when he does it, he makes noises to get our attention and waits for us to say something to him.. like pretty bird.

OK, after a long morning of phone calls and about 80 miles of driving, "Dizzy" has a new cage (old one pictured in full) :

After getting Dizzy out of the old cage, he flew straight to the top of the new one, sat down, fluffed up and hasnt moved since, looks quite happy :

Now for the downside, long story so bear with me! The parrot was advertised for £500, we haggled over the phone as you do and got the price down to £350 as it was a 3.5hr round trip.

When we were 10 minutes away the woman text saying she now wanted £400 as she had been offered that. We ignored the text as we just pulled up outside pretty much anyway.

When we went in, she then said (assuming we hadn't read the text I guess) she wanted £450 as someone down the road had offered her that. We basically said no, we agreed a price and she let us take him home.

The impression we got was that she was trying to scam us out of more money as we had driven so far. Anyhow, we got a text an hour ago from her (bearing in mind she said he was healthy and never mentioned a vet when we asked) saying her vet had called.

She claims she took it in for a check-up a week ago and that the vet had called her and told her that they found blood in the parrots poo. She told us we had to take the bird back straight away. We have asked for the vets details so we could call and speak to them to confirm what she was saying as it sounded a little more like she wanted it back as she had been offered more money.

She said the vet said it may have, well first it was a parrot disease then later on said a zoonosis disease. She still hasnt given over the vets contact details and seems to be avoiding doing so.

Me and the wife think she is full of it, but have no idea what diseases amazons get, what symptons etc to look for. Dizzy is looking healthy, no discharge, bright eyes, no visible blood in poo.

So is there anything obvious we need to look out for?..is she full of it and trying to get the bird back to sell for more money?? Any advice appreciated but I'm not letting her have the bird back as I dont think it was being looked after well enough at all anyway.

I wouldn't give her the bird either. I would find an avian vet in your area and have your own full checkup done.

He definitely looks happier and nice size cage :)

Just take Dizzy to the vet yourself, have him checked there and tell the woman you have it all sorted.

Money has now traded hands, she has nothing to do with the bird. :)

Yey. + nice cage by the way, huge improvement on his previous one thats for sure. Hope he's settling in well :)

Dont take the Bird back! You have paid for it!

Once you have taken him for a check up, it will hopefully put your mind at rest that all is ok.

He is a lovely, vibrant colour and I am sure he will be very happy in his new, bigger, Cage :)

Well he certainly seems to like it, he's been sat on top since we got it. He did nip down for a bite to eat and drink and gone back up again. He looks a little tired....think the trip back from London took it out of him.
