Green Cheek Conure (Baby Bird)
Hey there everyone,
My name is Haley and I'm new to the forum, and frankly I'm pretty new to the bird life. After starting my wildlife biology program, I was introduced to the avian world for the first time ever and it didn't take long for me to fall in love. After a year of being dead set on getting a bird, I'm finally putting a deposit down on a baby tomorrow morning. What am I getting you ask?! A green Cheek Conure! The most loveable little balls of mischief ever!
I will either be getting a turquoise, yellow sided or pineapple. Although I favor turquoise, it will really boil down to which baby has the best personality for me and my life.
Any recommendations for what I can do to make the transition easy and the new baby healthy and happy are greatly appreciated.
I'm excited to be apart of the community!

Hello Haley,

Welcome to the forum! Just a quick question: are you going to continue hand feeding the baby conure? Or are you going to wait until it's fully weaned? :-)

Fully weaned!! Like I said, I'm new so I am definitely not ready to hand feed one myself haha. 😂😊

Have a general check up right away by a Certified Avian Vet, that way, you'll know for sure that your new baby is healthy, and if not, the doctor would be able to tell you what to do, what type of food/vitamins/meds would be best etc. make sure your cage is big enough, always change the water, since you're bringing home a baby bird, introduce it right away to healthy fresh/cooked food such as fresh or mashed (Cooked) fruits and vegetables. Study their poop, know the healthy looking poop color and any sudden change should not be ignored. Give it lots of toys especially foraging/enrichment toys and most importantly, shower the baby bird with lots of love and attention. [emoji4]

Welcome to the forums, Haley! Great choice for your first parrot, looking forward to pics and the homecoming!!

On my way to meet the babies right now. Thank you to everyone who gave advice! My cage is 3.5 feet tall, 3 feet long and about 2 feet deep. It's pretty massive but I'm hoping it's big enough for a Conure.

Bigger cages are generally better! An inviting refuge well stocked with toys provides a welcoming and challenging place to play and rest.

Since you are open to the specific coloration, the notion of seeking the best match is ideal. Many of us have been "chosen" by our parrots!

Soooooo, I went in with no preference and was shown one turquoise, one yellow sided and one pineapple. The turquoise was handsome and very boastful but wasn't big on handling and tried to get away at every chance, even from the breeder. The yellow sided was extremely sassy lol, also I found her to be rather small. She took a shine to me but in the form of trying to pull my hair out. She was also very nippy and bite proactive. Then there was the pineapple, he was a chubby little man and upon talking to him he cooed at me. After about 5 minutes of messing with him he already took to stepping up for me, and he offered not one time to nip even when the breeder turned him upside down. Needless to say, the little pineapple will be coming home with me next week sometime when he is completely weaned. I'll attach some pictures when I get a chance to get on my laptop.

Hello, and welcome, and congratulations!

I can't wait to follow your adventures. Yes, GCCs really are a most wonderful little parrot.

Ooooooooooooooh! Time to think about a name!!!!!!!

So glad you found us!

Congratulations, you have been chosen!! The next week will pass as slow as molasses, but will be well worth the wait!

Tried to upload pictures and it requires a URL which I do not have lol. When I dragged them over it just showed two little blerp images.
Also, I am calling him a he because the breeder did a pelvic examination and loosely described him as a boy haha.
Name ideas are Tofu, Gimli, Jasper, and Loki.:rainbow1:

Update: I uploaded them to an album on my profile. If anyone wants to see they are on there. I believe he is high red, but I am not really sure.

Aw, he's beautiful! Congratulations (now you just have to wait through a very long week) :)

Darling! You have a long week ahead of you. [emoji4]

I went to visit my baby tonight because he will not be available for pick up until Thursday. My breeder prefers to let them have a couple good flights in before she sends them home/trims their wings and my lazy boy has no interest in the flying game hahaha.
I added some pictures to a new album on my profile that are more clear, and sadly I still can't figure out how to post them directly to a thread. Enjoy!

"Gimli" is home and adjusting to his environment. He's extremely social and loves to be out with people. He is a nosy little fella and likes to get into everything he can. Really his only downside is the biting, it hurts quite a lot. The hardest part is getting him to let go lol. I'm trying multiple different tactics to get him to stop, I plan to try to plastic bag method tomorrow. Im just wondering if as he gets older this really will calm down? Of course I'm curving it but I know a lot of it is because he's still a baby basically. Hoping with time he understands.
