hey all.
i'm a 30 year old woman, a disabled combat veteran, and an avid animal advocate and lover.
i'm new to the joys of parrot parenthood and am loving it. my girlfriend and i adopted a 2 year old congo african grey from a fellow disabled veteran that could no longer care for him due to his own failing health. we were told he is probably a male, but haven't had him checked. we call him george.
geoge is an awesome guy and we both feel lucky to have him as part of our family. he made the transition into our home with very little noticeable stress and appears very happy and relaxed. the vet said he is the picture of health. he is on harrisons pellet food, along with fresh fruit/veggies, and of course a few of his cheddar flip crackers, which are the only kind he'll eat.
he is a huge talker and interacts very well. he has a vocabulary of about a 100 words or so and you can carry on a decent conversation with him.
he loves human interaction and anytime any of my 4 dogs or two cats goes near his cage he'll ask 'what's up buddy?'...they seem a little shocked that he can talk like me and they can't.
he's a very affectionate bird and will let me pet/stroke/tickle him all over for as long as i can stand it. he's great playing with his toys, foraging, etc. he's started regurgitating food for me and has started making a strange, heavy breathing type of noise and vibrated his wings bc he seemed so excited with the physical affection he was getting from me.
we bought him a bigger cage a week ago, but have been getting him use to other things and just let him go in it yesterday. i've heard that some birds don't do well with the change, but he did beautifully and was swinging from the top doing a dance after about an hour. i want to find some good rope to make him a great net out of. any ideas?
i want to do right by him and never want him to suffer as a result of my inexperience. i've read everything i can get my hands on, but also desire to learn from those who share their own experiences and opinions, which is why i'm here. thank you for having me.
ps, would anyone be able to tell me where i might be able to find out what all types of natural branches (like in the woods in my backyard) are and are not ok to make perches/stands etc out of for him? thanks
