I'm not terribly interested in having Fred perform like a dog. It's mental stimulation, from what I've read, and many recommend target training of some sort. He's terriby bright, and I don't want him getting bored. I actually thought it would be good for him...

Sharon, all my reading on trick training is the same. It's good for building a bond with your bird, it gives them confidence and it does mentally stimulate them. It is supposed to help reduce problems like screaming as well, because instead of going in their cage to scream, they go in their cage to sit and think about the new things they have learned. I know I personally don't have much bird experience but I have read a heck of a lot of resources and they all say the same thing about trick training. Obviously it can be fun to show off the tricks your bird can do, but there is so much more to it! So don't worry, it is good for him =]

You are better off getting your bird to engage in active foraging behavior as this is what they do all day in the wild...look for food. It is very stimulating for them. This is a link to a seminar presented by Mickaboo Parrot Rescue here in Northern California. The Avian Vets giving the lecture happen to be my bird's doctors and they have one of the best reputations in the country. This video has about 8 or 9 parts but it is highly informative and really good for any bird owner to watch. If you don't believe me about Medical Center for Birds or Dr. Brian Speer, just google his name and you will see that he is really on the forefront of Parrot care and behavior.

Oh thank you so much for giving us the oppurtunity to further our understanding of birds through this seminar. I have bookmarked it so that I can view all the episodes. I suggest you post this as a thread of its own so it will stand our more.

I just wanted to telll you, that your Fred is proabably one of the most hapiest birds, and all the "tricks" you do with him, just makes your relasionship with Fredy stronger, and just keep on doing the good work, amazons loves our intension, and you have a great relasionship with the Fredy,and I like you both!!!
