How can I keep a sun conure in my house?

Hi I’m really desperate. I need to know how I can keep a sun conure in my house( I live in a complex) and it won’t make such a big noise. Are you able to train it to stop screaming so much. Please please help.

Do you already own the bird or do you want him but realize its not that feasible?

You might have posted how do I make the sun rise in the west instead of the east. It all depends, some birds are naturally quiet and polite some like to make a ton of noise even in the same species.

If you already own it then basically just talk to it and explain he can't be loud, I know that sounds really stupid but sometimes birds can "catch on" to the idea you are trying to confer. Hush, no, to loud, I wouldn't use treats because then you would be reinforcing "if I'm loud he will gimme a treat so I shut up". Hopefully someone in the next hour or day has some better advice but please explain the situation more for them.

They are very loud. Mine is usually quiet as a mouse when he is with me, however, if I'm not in his sightline look out! I have trained him to call me with soft chirps, but if that doesn't work he will still resort to loud shrieks. Also, if he sees something alarming like a rabbit in the back yard, a bird fly by, or someone coming to the front door he'll let out an alarm call. Honestly, if I were in a complex I would not consider a sun conure. Good luck!

ALL sun conures are LOUD but not all sun conures are noisy.

The noise level can be controlled with proper training. THAT is where your issue is likely to be.

Sun conures are not really good apartment birds because of their pitch. However, I live in an apartment building and only one person has ever complained (but she complains about everything).

That being said, Skittles still makes noise but he doesn't do it for hours on end.

Not sure what the laws are in your state- but in mine, its nearly impossible to evict someone for "making too much noise" during the day. If its 1a, thats a different story. Or if it is going on for hours on end, every day for a prolonged period.

I have had a LOT of birds over the years and Skittles is the most quiet bird I've ever had (though he wasn't always as quiet as he is now). Yes, he's still noisy, but its nothing unreasonable. It used to be, but with proper training its manageable.

But each person has different limits. I am not bothered by the noise, but others may be so I keep it under control.

My advice to you is to think about it some more. If its going to be just you and the sun and if you're home most of the time, it may work out. But if you are gone a lot, have other pets/roomies or live a hectic lifestyle, it probably won't work out.

My advice is talk to your neighbors and feel out the situation. That may answer your question right there.

PS I also want to echo what Kalel said. You may be better off with a different species.

if you want a Sun conure personality but without the 100DB scream then a Green Cheek is the way to go. BUT even then a Greencheek can make a racket when they want, any bird can. Even a Cockatiel can be complained about. It all depends on the thickness of the walls, how much sound dampening stuff is in your place and how sensitive your neighbours ears are.

Also being friendly with the neighbours is a good step too. you'd be amazed at how quiet a bird can be to a friendly neighbour, you'd also be surprised how loud a bird can be to a neighbour that isn't too friendly with you. Talk to your neighbours, ask them if they're okay with a bird in the building, people are more willing when they're considered first as they know you're thinking of them and not just yourself

Yeah Jordan, your lesson here is go for the bird that is right for you, not the bird you want. To be cliche, you are jamming a round peg through a square hole. Sun conure in apartmnents just don't mix, and you'll never make it work.

Get the bird that beats fits into your life, if you want a bird NOW. If you can wait until you own a home, a sun conure could be in your future.

My lil Booger (SC) came to me cuz of apartment complaints..... (lucky me!)
Cockatiels have much less volume and less irritating tone to their chatter.

enough space to stop a jet engine noise? that's not much of an exaggeration. Being stood next to a plane's engine at take-off is 130DB a Sun Conure calls at 100DB. It's pretty darn close in terms of noise and they will do it every single day.

A Sun in an apartment is doomed to failure unless you do some extensive and expensive sound-proofing.

Don't look for a specific parrot. work out a list of characteristics you want, your living situation, your work situation ETC and then work out what species would fit your home. There's more than you'd think out there all of them easier to live with than a Sun, you have to have an iron will and recording studio levels of sound-proofing to live with one. Remember outside of Cockatoos Sun Conures are one of the top birds given to rescues, purely because of that scream.

Also remember when thinking of getting a parrot to "Plan for the worst, hope for the best"

I suggest a cockatiel or a Green Cheek Conure. My two cockatiels are very quiet, they'll chatter and chirp during the day but nothing like a sun conure.

Is there a specific reason you don't want a cockatiel? They're great for beginners to parrots (they're easy to train, relatively quiet, easy to care for) and will not be a noise issue compared to the Sun conure.

Suns are great, but they are very loud. I had a Jenday and his screeches could be heard around the 4000 square foot house and outside! It's ear-piercing and your neighbors will most likely complain. Don't believe me? Check out these videos...

This wouldn't be a question for your neighbors but for your landlord, the one you pay to stay there. They may have a policy against noisy animals.
