Parrots
1 BFA- Kiwi. Hatch circa 98', forever home with us Dec. 08'
I frequently bring Kiwi with me into the kitchen on his perch while I'm prepping dinner(he likes to watch me lol). Usually, he stays on his perch. Last night however, I guess me peeling potatoes was too much for him to resist and he climbed over and tried to steal some potato peels (which I'm pretty sure he can't have). After I warded him off, he proceeded to climb on the dishrack and start flinging stuff out (several container lids and a fork!). He was being very very naughty last night lol. After we moved to back to the living room he kind of insisted on getting on my leg and took a most adorable nap while the potatoes boiled :D.

Ha!! Awesome. That's so cute. Georgie was extremely naughty in the kitchen on a regular basis, where Gilbert is generally pretty good, like Kiwi.

What a sweet picture!!!! You should blow it up and frame it [he is your boy ] Potato peels that cant have? [good to know] Funny when a bigger bird is determined to do something LOOK OUT :)

Yep, tater skins can be toxic to parrots...potatoes (except sweet potatoes) are members of the nightshade family and vines, leaves & skins can be deadly.....

White potatoes should always be cooked before serving to your feathered friends.....the fruits of many nightshade plants are fine while the plant's greenery is not.....

FYI, the most famous food members of the nightshade family include potatoes, tomatoes, many species of sweet and hot peppers (all species of Capsicum, including Capsicum annum), and eggplant. Less well know, but equally genuine nightshade foods include ground cherries, tomatillos, garden huckleberry, tamarillos, pepinos, and naranjillas. Pimentos (also called pimientos) belong to the nightshade family, and usually come from the pepper plant Capsicum annum. Pimento cheese and pimento-stuffed olives are therefore examples of foods that should be classified as containing nightshade components.....fruit's good, but plants, stems, vines & leaves are not.....

Thanks Weco for the further explanation. I've always heard raw potatoes were bad for birds, but never looked that much into why. Ive also always heard cooked potatoes were pretty nutritious for them (and us! We eat lots of potatoes in this house lol). Kiwi is a big potato fan, he likes them boiled, baked, mashed, hash browns, you name it, he's a potato fiend! I was pretty surprised at his little "tantrum". He was throwing stuff bigger than he is

Oh shame Kiwi was only trying to help you !!!!!!
Now he will never ever offer again LoL

Mishka is fascinated with my washing machine in the kitchen.
When doing a load, he sits in the kitchen on his little play stand and watches the machine going through it's cycles.
He is so cute and turns his head which ever way, when the cycle changes rotation.

If only he would actually help with the housework :-) He is my little "kitchen" helper. Whenever I'm prepping food or doing dishes, he's always right there on his perch, and usually behaves himself. He doesn't care one way or the other about the washing machine, but he does like sitting on the drying rack while I hang clothes. He will fling the underwear and socks off and make this laughing noise when I pick them up:eek: I wonder why your bird likes the washing machine so much? I bet it's adorable to see him "dance" when the cycles change though :D

Mango was trying to steal cheese last night. He has just discovered he can fly, and he isnt very good at it, but he can get from his cage to the counter where the food is being prepped. He didnt care that I offered him the carrots, peppers, and sugar snap peas, he was determined to get the cheese.

That's a happy zon that gets included in your daily activities. I know mine enjoy it. Especially if it has something to do with a water hose, or a cordless drill.

Henpecked- that video is too cute. How dare you give attention to that "yellow bird" instead of Jake lol. I wonder if he actually thinks the drill is another bird or just something his daddy is giving attention instead of him. Kiwi isn't a big touchy-feely bird, and he doesn't seem to care too much for having your undivided attention. He's a very happy boy just to be in the same room, doesn't matter what your doing. He finds housework especially interesting.

I've got a feeling you two will be as tight as "two pigs in a poke" before long.

We've had Kiwi a little over 5 years now. He didn't get a great start in life, but he does genuinely seem pretty happy with us. Hes more bonded to my husband, but he likes me enough. He will probably never want to be petted or cuddled, but so long as he steps up, I'm fine with that. I always say "he likes to flirt from a distance". He's a very intelligent and friendly bird, he just doesn't like being touched. As for bringing him around as I do my daily routines, the way I see it, he doesn't know any different that his "flock" is scrubbing the shower instead of eating papayas in the jungle. He interprets us as his "flock", probably thinks our routines are "normal" and just wants to be a part of it :-) I'm a big fan of including parrots in almost everything you do. I bet your flock are really bonded to you, especially since you've had some of them since they were babies. You sound like a very dedicated bird-owner, and you and Jake seemed very close.
