I was just wondering about what you guys do to keep them cool and healthy during summer? Do you make them shower everyday etc?

:)

Kiwi gets more 'soaking' baths in the summer, more juicy fruit (like melon and grapes for the extra moisture) and enjoys getting an ice cube in his water dish to play with (he goes nuts over cold things).

Hey thanks for replying :)
Baths as in twice a day?

Well, Kiwi comes in the shower and 'bathes' in his water dish every day, but he only gets 'damp'. He normally gets a soaking, wet-to-the-bone bath once or twice a week. In the heat of the summer, he gets a soaking bath pretty much every day.

Actually I've been looking for people to talk about just this lately - I thought all parrots were "hot weather birds,"'but it turns out I was wrong.

I had my BCC out the first warm days and it only got up to 85 in the house - it was enough to make him pant and hold his wings out after being in a cold north winter for 7 months.

I now make sure he has an extra water dish to go swimming in; he dives in twice a day! I also agree with Kiwibird, ice cubes and fruit sound like good suggestions. I'm gonna try that, too. :)

My birds live in the house, so the routine is the same year round.

Thanks for the reply :)
my birds just hate taking a bath I have to sprinkle some water over them and its so hot here they pant so I make sure that there is,enough air circulation.

I live in Manchester, UK, where summer generally means clouds that are a little less grey than the ones we get in winter, so we don't have too much to worry about!

I feel you. I live in an apartment with no built in AC, and the windows are crank-style so I could not set up remote AC's either. When I'm home and it's very hot, I give Boomer quick showers as often as needed. When I'm not at home, I live windows open with a fan blowing out one of them, and 1 fan running inside the room on rotate. I also leave a huge bottle of ice inside his cage. He knows the ice bottle means cold because I introduced him to it. Because of how big the bottle is, when I come home, it still hasn't thawed out completely. This makes me feel better knowing that he has a means of cooling himself down (besides bathing in his water dish) while I'm away from home.

As long as our birds are acclimated slowly to the change in climate, they can adapt to a good extent. Just avoid direct sunlight on their cage whilst in summer. Hope this helps!

If my birds are outside I start by making sure they ALWAYS have shade, and not just flimsy shade from a thin sheet or something, but like "thick shade" from a piece of wood or some other 100% solid surface. They also must have clean water at all times, and I feed frozen fruits and veggies, still frozen, in a seed cup. Make sure the food, water, and treats are out of the sun and check them to make sure they don't get hot. Also, research your parrot's species and see what temps they do well in. if it gets too hot you need to bring them inside. Also, do not temperature shock them; be sure they can adjust slowly to new temps if they are used to AC or a colder climate. :) Mine also love ice-cubes! And they are a great way to keep the water cooler longer.
