Today we went to the local pet store to pick up a bag of food- something I've been putting off for a few days now.

I always visit the birds to see who's there, and today I discovered a 17 yr old U2 who was surrendered to the store 3 days ago. Of course, there was a sign discouraging anyone from sticking their fingers in his cage, and he was doing his best to ignore me. Finally after about at least 10 minutes of sweet talking him and trying to coax him over he finally did!

He turned into a giant puddle of marshmallow fluff, with sweet sounds ~he let me preen his pins, scratch his wings, rub his beak -the works. Now, normally- big beaks scare the heck outta me, but there was just something about him....I wasn't scared of him at all. It brought tears to my eyes, and had there not been bars between us I'm sure I would've held him like a baby.

The shop owner was surprised and told me to come back and visit him, which I probably will....and other customers saw me snuggling him and were amazed (remember the sign on his cage?) and of course I told them I had birds of my own and you have to understand their behaviors before sticking your fingers in random cages.

I can't get this guy out of my head, and I wish I had the money to bring him home :(

You know you have to get him OH what sweet pictures. I would have fallin in love also . Such a pretty bird

Awwwwww!!!!!

That's why my hubby doesn't let me go to the pet store "unsupervised".

My last visit, I feel in LOVE with a Moluccan.

Oh how sweet.:D Are you sure there isn't a way to get him?
Where there is a will there's a way...got any antiques or jewelery to sell?

Awww Shirre! How sweet is that! He can't get close enough. That little guy is a heartbreaker. Do you know why he was surrendered?

Oh my husband was there with me lol when we got home I was kinda moping and he asked what was wrong and I said I just wanted to go back and snuggle the bird.

I do have things I could sell, but I'm not really sure adding another bird would help my current health issues....and I honestly don't think hubby would want such a large bird.

Sidney's demeanor changed when he saw my hubby walk up, so he might be apprehensive of men. I'm not quite sure....

I don't know the exact details of why he was surrendered, but he came from their store 4 years ago. So the poor guy is back where he started....

Lol I think if he could've squeezed himself through the bars, he would've! He wanted some serious snuggles!!!!

Uh o. Do I foresee a large cockatoo in your future? You know what they say about denial right:54: You can deny all you want that you will be back for him:D Curious, was he at the bird hut? He looks like a sweetie.

Those pictures are worth a thousand words, Shirre!!! :smile015: I'm melting over here. :)

So....when are you going back to that place? :54: I just KNOW Sidney would be so happy to see you again. :D (...and vice versa)

Unfortunately, I doubt he will be coming home with me unless a miracle happens. :(

No, it wasn't the bird hut...but he was a total sweetie!

I'm not sure when I'll go back to see him... But I'd definitely love to get some out-of-cage time with him and maybe bring him a toy.... We'll see.

I know it must have been so hard for you leave without him!

These birds just touch a special place in our hearts, don't they?

Keep going to visit him - you never know what the "universe" will provide to make it possible for you to bring him home!

He has a hefty ransom though...$700 is a big price for a 17 yr old re-homed bird.

Id have to sell my motorcycle :)

Once you start to play with birds you get attached. Before I got Justine I was going to the store every day I had time after work. I would play with the other birds there they had for sale and just when I was going to put a down payment the ones they got in were sold. I was inbetween a Blue and Gold Mccaw, Major Mitchell Cockatoo, Moluccan Cockatoo ( Rare in the store). It took a while but I finally decided on the Umbrella. Once I finally put the down payment about a month later they got little baby Justine in. She grew attached to me instantly. Every day I would come and hold her. If you look at the pics in the new members page, it was when she was first there. She would always fall asleep in my arms.. But once you got the bug, who knows what will happen. I have been tempted to buy another bird a few times.

You know Chili is looking forward to a new friend!

Might the pet store negotiate lower for an experienced owner, or are they just mercenary and wish to hold out for a "market price?" :(

Aw, Shirre he is so sweet. I can completely see why you wished you could cuddle with him. :)

He was probably surrendered for the same reason cockatoos are usually surrendered: noise and/or he bit somebody. It takes grit to have a U2 in the house. And they CAN be such cuddle bugs that you wonder what demon possessed them when they turn into tornado sirens a few minutes later.

What a beautiful and sweet boy!
I am so glad you got a chance to visit with him, he obviously loved that. Even if you can't bring him home, you have brightened up his day, and I have a sneaking suspicion you will brighten many more for him:)
