I got a free cage! Thoughts on it?

So this year I'll be getting my first Conure (Turq. GCC!) My boss knows this, and her 24 year-old Sun Conure passed away a few years ago. She asked if I wanted his old cage, and of course I said yes!

It's 34"H x 22"W x 17"D

Is this a good starter cage? Also, it's missing the bottom grate, is this a problem? Thank you!

Oh, and all of the toys/perches are new haha. They're not from my boss, I just went a little shop-happy when I decided a bird was something I wanted.

It looks like a nice Cage The only thing you need to be careful of, is the Bar Spacing! We had a Member yesterday that had to buy a new Cage as her Conure kept getting its head stuck through the bars which was also 3/4" bar spacing.

Yeah, I wasn't thrilled to see it was that wide, but for free I couldn't NOT try it out. Suns are a little bigger so she never had any trouble, but I'm hoping my future gcc is on the bigger end size-wise. haha

Yes, you will probably be ok with a Sun in there They are slighly bigger, so it may not be a problem.

Its a nice looking Cage though

I just remeasured it (I just read you should measure from inside to inside of bar) and it's actually more of a 5/8.

5/8" is fine for a GCC. That is the size spacing that Maxx's cage is.

Looks like a pretty nice cage, that was very thoughtful of your boss! Look as though it's lacking on perches, you may want to consider another large natural branch (of bird safe wood) or rope perch down lower. If the dishes were plastic, you should go ahead and replace them (ceramic and steel dishes can be easily sterilized, plastic, not so much). The cage should be cleaned before your new bird goes in by power hosing it down and scrubbing any grossness off. Any used branches and toys he gave you should be sterilized by boiling or pouring boiling water over them (if too big to go in a pot). Obviously, my zons cage is larger, but it's similarly designed with the legs like that. It's a great feature to have a cage you can easily tuck your birds smaller emergency/travel cage, t-perch and a basket for the night cage cover/toys under! Makes for a much neater bird area when the cage has room for storage underneath. I would also suggest a large, rubber backed rug (you can buy them cheap at Ross or big lots type stores) under the cage to keep poop and food from damaging your carpet. Best of luck to you!

Wow! Thanks for the advice Kiwi. I'm planning on buying ceramic dishes and I've added a few more perches.

I agree that the space underneath it is great! I plan on storing birdie related things there. And I will most definitely check out the rubber rug. I know exactly what you're talking about.

I am glad he has finally come round I can remember when you first joined and how excited you were then.. so you have been very patient and I am sure the would have been well worth it once you finally get, He or She

I dont like not having the bottom grate to cover the waste and keep birdies from eating dropped food etc on the floor. If you change it every day it shouldnt be a problem though

I understand the use of a bottom crate but I never use them in Rosie's cage, she used to always fall and it was very dangerous for her to be hitting the grate. As long as your bird doesn't always want to be on the bottom it's fine. Make sure to change it out everyday(if your birds been out all day and hasn't made a mess or pooped in the cage it's usually fine).

The cage that I first brougt my gcc home did not have a bottom grate and was not big enough ,however it worked till I got her flight cage. The only problem is she must have been a paper punch in a past life because she would spend her day making spitballs out of the cage paper and tossing them on the floor. Now her flight cage has a grate but she has a register tape on top of her cage that she pulls thru the bar and makes spitballs and tosses them on the floor, however at least it is clean paper
