Green cheek conure - Sydney (Syd) Hatched 2/2017
Last night just before bedtime Syd did his usual trick of going crazy and was flying haphazardly around the room when suddenly I heard a squawk and a crash.

I'm not sure what he did or how but there he was in a heap half in and half out of a basket on the floor. He happily stepped up and I was horrified to find a medium length tail feather that looked as if it had broken off in the crash. Some minutes later there was another. My heart sank as I safely put him to bed.

This morning I was reluctant to let him fly at all and held my breath as he finally launched himself fully expecting him to be limited in height or direction. But no - he looks fine and certainly as cheeky as ever. Somewhere in that feather quilt that he wears are 2 broken feather stubs - presumably he will do what is necessary.

sounds like he was having a funny night last night. Maybe getting a bit overzealous whilst flying, maybe even a bit sleepy but not knowing when to give up and sleep

silly Syd!

he will be fine.....relax. It's part of growing up... your bird isn't a year old yet....he will fly more cautious now.

They break tail feathers all the time. They grow back. It happens.

Next molt he'll have good as new tail feathers. And if things run their normal course, he'll get carried away and break them again...

Here here nothing at all to worry about. I’ve been flight training my ekkie, who barbers (chews up) all his body feathers. This year for the first time he went after every last tail feather he had plus a couple primaries. He could still very much fly, granted when he did it was over short distances of 6 feet or so. But he was unhampered.

So a couple broken tail feathers are nothing to Syd. He won’t even notice they are gone.
