I wanted to post this as I did make a mistake, and it could have ended much worse. I just bought my sun conure a new cage. It’s large, and runs pretty much to the floor. It’s in our living room. I’ve had my German shepherd for 13 years, and he’s not bothered any of my parrots. They feed him, and he’s always checking on food that may have been dropped. Today I took my German shepherd on a walk, and it looked like there was dripping blood from his nose. When he coughed it spritzed. It wasn’t draining but dripping consistently. When I got home from my walk I looked at it more closely. It looked like there was a gash on his nostril, but nothing that I could see that would indicate dripping blood. My German shepherd is a senior dog, and has some health issues. He just had pneumonia last month. So I made a vet appointment. What I found out.. My sun conure is going to the bottom of his new cage, and biting my German shepherd right in the nostril and leaving gashes that are deeper. My German shepherd is cleaning the cage bars where there is food particles. Conure cages at least mine are fairly flimsy. If my German shepherd wanted to do damage he certainly could. This could have ended so much worse. I just wanted to share this, as I don’t want others to make this mistake, and have it end worse.

Thank you for posting this, @kme3388. I'm so sorry this has happened, but you may very well have saved someone else from experiencing something far worse. I hope everyone is ok up there! šŸ™ šŸ™ šŸ™

@kme3388 - Oh my! I have a similar problem with my Green cheek, Quasar, and my dog, Winter. Winter surfs the plastic tray, and Quasar's taken to nipping the poor dog every time she's grazing. She's growled, too, at the conure, but as she's a 13 pound italian greyhound, I don't worry about her getting into the cage.

Green Cheeks really do have no fear...

I had to seriously put Charlie on a conure time out so he doesn’t bite our dogs. Out of all of my parrots it’s my conure. My head is still spinning in circles trying to understand this.

Uh oh Charlie, it's the "naughty corner" for you!!

My dogs nostril swelled where Charlie got ahold of him. It has white stuff on it now. He was put on antibiotics. The vet counted 5 puncture wounds right in the nostril.

Poor baby! That looks painful!

How's Charlie doing since his mate Kiwi passed?
Charlie is eating, and is spending more time with us. He’s started to chew holes in our shirts again. He’s not playing with toys still. I’m going to be moving him into an aviary room we are painting. I have some issues with my arms so it’s taking me a lot longer than expected. I need a lot of breaks.

This is a problem with cats and dogs. They get near or are bribed to get within beak range. My fear is foraging tongues getting bit and going unnoticed. I had no way block cimplete access. So strict dog training. The dogs now look to see if I am looking. The cats were a problem getting on top of cage. A spray bottle was the tool there. Eventually those cats learned the range. So a trip to different discount styles of water pistols did the job.
