I put a deposit and I'm second on a waiting list for a panama amazon at the bird farm in Ohio. While reading all the information about them I'm learning that they look a lot like yh amazons but very different personality s how will I know I'm getting what I'm buying I'm not a experienced amazon person. I just got a 11 year old yellow wing female who is a dream bird. One more question would you recommend a male or female, I'm hoping for a mellow good talker. Any pic or info would be greatly appreciated.

Will these work ? ? ?

Panama amazons have darker beaks and feet than double yellow heads. Panamas have light to dark gray feet and beaks while DYHs have light tannish/pinkish beaks and feet. It's a pretty easy identification. As for personality and desire to speak, every bird is going to be unique as an individual, doesn't matter the species. Proper care, diet and training from the day you bring your bird home is really the key to having a loving, well behaved bird, though speech is something the individual bird has to be willing to do (some will never speak). One of the biggest things you can do to socialize your bird and keep them happy is to include them in your daily activities. It makes them feel part of your "flock", and an included bird is much more open to training and learning.

Immature birds are also not often as brightly colored as the adults.

I have lots of Pans and also breed them. Would you like some pics? Yes they are easy to confuse with immature DYH . Both are a subspecies of Yellow Front. Their personalities are a world apart. Hen Pan is A#1 choice of all zons. True Pans should have the beak feet and cere of DYHs, However a black spot on the upper mandible is very common. Young DYHs will often have color on their thigh at a much earlier age than the average Pan. Dyhs will also have more color in the wing bend. I've never meet a mean pan but can't say that about most DYHs. If the yellow is passing below the eyes, down the cheeks, then DYH. I'm out of town but will see if i can dug up some pics. I have a old hen Pan who i need to put down, i should get some pics of her on here before she goes, she's the typical laid back Panama.

This is Kong, 38 yr old hen Panama. The bird in most of the video is Stacie, my wife's YNA hen. Stacie isn't talking ,the bird you heard is Kong, what you doing? laughing, etc. Kong appears for a few seconds at the end, I'll see if i can't find some better video. This was filmed many years ago before Kong got sick.[ame="http://youtu.be/Vxay1bQ99P8"]MVI_0008.MOV - YouTube[/ame]

Here's another , this about a Red Lored we just got who'd never been out of his cage in 20 yrs and his first taste of pellets, that's Kong the Panama showing him how to eat pellets. See how well Pans get along with other birds, can't say that about DYH

Henpecked ,your videos were great !! I love to see what the different species can be like:)That Red Lored looks like a pretty sweet guy for not being outside the cage. Lots of talking going on there:) Why would you have to put a bird down ?

Lol hen can we say much for double yellow heads? I mean they are just erm... Characters or should I say mostly devils lol. Pans are defiantly better IMO and much more calm.

She has long term VitA defencies that have led to bacterial infections in her throat, They are becoming cancerous and have to be scraped out so she can eat and breathe. It's every week on thursday AM now( last 6/8 months) and there;s so much more blood now, It's getting to only one or two good days aweek. By late Tuesday she's fighting for air. It's so sad. Kong is a santuary bird that some one gave us. We can't rehome or sell her ,we're a forever home. It's just such a shame that folks didn't know to give parrots anything other than sunflower seeds . The lady we got her from had had her for 30 yrs.Kong has really " blossomed" living with other amazons and is the most amazing bird. We've been up and down on the weight loss but it seems now, we can't stop the plunge. It's not right that the good die young. Yeah. we've had her for about 8 yrs now, couldn't save her, but maybe her story will save a few other birds.

Oh Im so sorry Henpecked , These birds are so human like! Im sure you have seen alot in all your zon experiences. As you said maybe we can all learn from this to help prevent it.

Wow, Richard, I'm sitting here crying after reading Kong's story. THANK YOU for taking such incredibly good care of her for the past 8 years.

I really have to politely disagree with you here. IMO, it really depends on the individual bird. My parents DYH (45+ y/o wild caught female) is the one of the sweetest and most calm birds you could meet. So much so, she used to be allowed in my crib when I was a baby, she is that gentle. My BFA (another "notorious" species), is in general a big sweetie too (he does have hormonal moments in the spring, but overall, he's NOTHING like the reputation his species has). My dads goffin (known for being sweet and cuddly) is no angel, and you probably wouldn't want to see what happens by trying to cuddle with him. Parrots are individuals, and I have never felt the reputations some species get are justified. I think a few poorly cared for birds as well as a few naturally "feisty" ones give an entire species of generally sweet birds a bad rap.

I hear you kiwi, i was just making generalizations , and that's not fair.

I'm so sorry to hear about Kong, must be a terrible thing for you to go through.
Bosley is a sweetie too, but he is feisty as well.

Well I didn't mean it in the way it came across I just ment more along the lines of mine and what henpecked mentioned about his.. I have yes met some very sweet ones and I personally never stereotype parrots(never with gender preferences or species). So I kinda ment it as a joke to hen not so much towards all dyh just to specify. Most dyh are great, but I take in the misfits and turn them great so that is what mine is just he has a devil side lol. Sorry kiwi didn't mean to offend you it came across wrong:p.

But with that said the pan nature is more laid back compared to most dyh so I still agree to a pan ver dyh if you can.

No offense taken :) Anyone who has serious experience with parrots knows they are all unique individuals and can't be lumped into groups. It's just there is SO MUCH bad information circulating around about certain species (all the "hot" amazon garbage, and sites like mytoos.com), anyone who is just learning about parrots may miss out on a great bird by actually believing that kind of nonsense. I also think different people want different experiences with their bird. While Kiwi is untypically quiet for a zon and rarely bites, he is extremly independent. He doesn't want to cuddle, he wants to explore and do his own thing. He can be curious to the point of being naughty, and has quite an attitude when he gets caught. You would have to intentionally provoke Lucy (the DYH) for her to become aggressive, but she is loud and will make her presence known if she feels someone is a threat (repair men, extended family ect...). Those are traits I personally prefer in a bird. Other people do want a little more docile, little more lovey bird, and the smaller zons do tend to fit that profile better. I can agree with that. But I still don't think a bird being "boistrous" is a negative trait so long as they are well-trained.

How could this zon' be a mean bird? :D
