I really think I got lucky with Miss Aria. When I went to the rescue to see her the first time, she had been there about a month. To get her out of the cage, she had to be toweled, and even out of her cage, she would lunge at hands before she would step up. I planned on having a long road to get her where she needed to be.
I have had her home for 10 days, and there isn't anywhere on her I can't touch. Back, chest, on top of her wings, under her wings, her beak, her head, her face. I know they aren't fond of being touched on the head, but I want to make sure she will accept it because I want to be able to harness train her. She doesn't have to like it, since it's not something I plan on doing all the time, she just has to agree to leave my fingers attached to my hands when I do
Even when she is "correcting me", she is gentle about it now. It's not a bite, it's more of a touch with her beak, just saying, "hey, I don't like that".
She will step up out of her cage with no issues, and she is getting better about stepping up off the top of her cage too. I will now let her put her beak on my hand, and even occasionally around my fingers since she is being gentle, and I think just looking to see if I have any more tasty treats hidden in there somewhere.
Never in a million years would I have thought she would progress this quickly, with the way she acted at the rescue. I don't think she really needed any training on how to be a "good" bird, I just think she needed a place where she felt comfortable. A rescue with different people in and out all the time, plus other, noisy birds, is not an Eclectus's idea of a good time.
I am really happy I got her, and I'm glad I didn't worry about how "mean" the female Eckies are said to be. I'm sure, since she is 9 months old now, that when she hits puberty, I'll be eating my words right there for a little bit. But it will be okay, we'll get through it. Maybe. I only say maybe because I just realized my human daughter will probably start hitting puberty at about the same time. Oh, my....
