i have wanted a parrot for a couple of years now, and i have decided after the holidays i am going to buy one. i like both birds, they both have qualities i like about them. my situation is we live in an apartment, and we do have two children. i am very schedule oriented, and i should be able to have at least two times a day(at a minimum,) for the bird to have out of cage time. i have had birds before, and my mother has had a lot of experience with them as well. my landlord is fine with me getting a parrot. i want a bird that will be affectionate, funny, ok to be by itself or not entertained by me at all hours too. i have searched for a while and have read people vouching for each bird. so, what in your experience would be best? i want the bird to bond with me., but not to be standoffish to my husband (or my kids in the years to come.)
thanks in advance for all advice given.
i also plan to buy from a good breeder.

*ive never used a forum before...have patience with me!

Hey research the quaker parrot. They are so nice and snuggly and a bit better talkers than the GCC. Trust me.

Well... I'm partial to ringneck.
For a while she didnt really have a personality due to her being sick (Kiwi, my IRN), though she's really starting to blossom. Loves to pick my food from my plate, or run to the budgies food while im filling it and eat all of it. I even found her one day (due to my sister) in the budgies cage trying to steal their millet... Very spunky, thinks everything is hers. She's never mean to anyone, she's very neutral, decides if she wants to come out regardless of person, if she wants to step up, etc.
she is a bit standoffish, she doesn't mind getting told to step up or step down, but she doesn't really favor anyone, either. She's not like a GCC who you can snuggle all the time.
But then again, she's still a bit sick and might become a snuggly bird, though if your looking for one I don't think IRN quite fits (or my IRN at least, lol). They're not affectionate by nature.

thank you both for replying. my mother actually had a quaker when i was a child, when it passed away i remember being very sad, and telling it goodbye before they buried it. i definitely want something that wants to cuddle, but like i said, everyone says something different. i have heard that ringnecks get a bad rap because of their bluffing stage, which doesnt sound fun, but hey, if i have survived two young kids, i think i have dealt with worse lol.

IRN's are not cuddly, or so I've heard.

Not sure what the bluffing stage is (getting to know them or terrible twos is what i mean) but when my ringneck bluffs me its not very scary. I mean, when she bites she doesn't really bite as much as justs touches me with her beak.

I'd say opt for a GCC if you want a cuddly bird :3

These two birds are very different but both have good qualities. The IRN will be much more independent, but a better talker.. Conures are much more cuddly. Having an IRN myself, I find them fascinating birds. They can be noisy however, with a higher pitched call than the GCC. As far as the bluffing stage, when they do they rarely bite with a lot of pressure. When green cheeks bite, it hurts. I'm partial to the IRN because I always loved the psittacula family of parrots.

you might also look at a caique they are little clowns Juno will go to anyone including my 5yr old nephew she is fine by herself but when she is out she is more than happy to be stuck to me like glue..she is also very cuddly

Green Cheek!!! :D they are cuddley and adorable! Lilo is by far THE best bird I have ever met or owned!

IRNs are more independent and accepting of different people from what I've seen, based on my ringneck and my roommate's gcc. The gcc will most likely be more cuddly, though they are known to be more aggressive. Also, while IRNs aren't cuddly (mine allowed petting on the head) they are extremely affectionate. You will know your IRN loves you, cuddles or no.

I obviously favor ringnecks. I found my roommate's gcc to be obsessed with cuddling. That bird just always had to be held. Also, I find ringnecks to be extremely smart.

In the end though, I would say focus more on the individual bird than the species. Handle as many as you can and pick the one that picks you.

Hi there, have you already chosen a bird?? I have one of each! The only thing i can say is that my Conure is more nippy and harder to read, like he will literally lie down in my hand to be tickled but then will bite you out of no where, lol not very hard but still, and he is also very agressive towards other ppl when he is on me.He attacked my son tonight :(, My indian ringneck however is less of a snuggler but he has never bitten us and will go with anyone! Hope it helps with your chioce! Good luck P.s. both can talk although the green cheek is less clear, he is a quiet talker, lol!!

I say get a Hyacinth macaw. Nice and BIG! :D Just kidding! Welcome to the forums! I'm sure you'll love whichever one you choose!

After seeing Bowie the lutino IRN on YouTube I was dying to get one (and I'd still like one ) and couldn't find one, but then I came across Sammie and it was love at first sight.
