Secret & MC, two blue front amazons
Original blood test showed one of my rescues (remember, both on only a seed diet before I received them) had a Uric Acid a bit high and an issue with a cell count. The repeat test (after about 6 months on pellets) came back with very high counts of protein, glucose, uric acid and SGOT (AST). Vet wants to recheck because she doesn't act like a sick bird.

She still acts pretty much the same as she has since I got her (randomly nice to me, later in the evening she is usually a sweetheart- but hissy and don't come near me quite often during the course of a day). Again - she had this attitude not long after I first brought her home (which was good - she looked like she was in a comatose state when I first got her).

So - questions: I know they have limited blood, will it hurt to have it drawn again? Don't want to ask the vet and appear like an idiot. Forum folks can consider me an idiot (note my name and the fact that I never had a bird and adopted 2 rescue amazons).

IF these values wind up being true . . . . I read on the internet about a holistic medication you could add that was like a miracle drug (aloe detox). Any possible truth to that or has anybody out there ever used it?

And before you respond - know that I do trust my vet and he is an Avian vet.

I dont have any input since im clueless too...i just wanted to say youre brave for taking on not one, but two rescue birds...and amazons!! :11: I applaud you.

I was madly in love with them before a week was out. Good thing I read a lot!

UPDATE! My vet requested the Lab to review and run the tests again. Results from that are back and it was a LAB ERROR. Apparently a "number factor" was inserted into the program. I am very thankful my vet did not immediately treat the parrot for something that it did not have. One very good reason here to have an experienced Avian veterinarian!

Her results from that test are normal, the DNA test is back and now I just have to contend with knowing that the parrot I assumed was a girl all along is actually a boy . . . .

Wow so she is a he.... but yay!!!!! Healthy bird!

Identities switch quickly in my home. My orange wing amazon (MC) is actually a blue-front (can't figure out how to change in my sign-in).

MC is quite a bit larger than Secret (who is now deemed to be a male). My husband mentioned that MC must be female because "he" talks quite constantly and Secret has to whistle to get heard in the house (and does a mean wolf-whistle).

What the heck, a lab error? I hope they didn't double charge you for their error...

I am so glad that they caught it, and that your birdy is healthy after all!!! Also, I do not think you are stupid, I should have made my name Clueless2 :P

No double charge - and no double visit to the vet, thankfully. They do NOT like road trips! I'm just Blessed to have a vet that realized it didn't look right.

I think the parrots are still afraid they are going to be leaving their mansions and nice home. In fact, when we have new people come through to visit - they clam up! MC is a chatter box and Secret does mean whistles and they have a tune they sing back and forth - but NOT a solitary peep when new folks are around!
