Interesting article..

I'll add that when people discovered Mascarene (including Mauritius) a lot of animals extinct, the dodo is the most known species. There were about 7 native parrots which lived only there, now there lives only one of them - echo parakeet which has two subspecies but only one still lives - Psittacula eques echo. Also they had a critic moment because there were about 12 birds so this is a miracle they survived

While these seemingly fascinating birds have sadly been long extinct by the hands of our species, it hard to fault people who lived in a timeframe where most were poorly educated, lacked access to information and had a generally harder time surviving themselves. Dodos were perhaps the very first cautionary tale about how easy it is to wipe out an entire species, so their deaths may not have been entirely in vain.

I will say, I have much less understanding for the things modern people, especially those in the industrialized world, are doing to animals and/or their natural habitats today. Unlike our ancestors hundreds of years ago, we are educated, have easy instantaneous access to vast amounts of information via the internet and live pretty cushy lives compared to people in the 15/1600s. There is no excuse for the thousands of animals being pushed to the brink of extinction today:mad:
