Congo African Grey - Beemo, Sun Conure - Charlie, Lovebird - Benny, Zsa Zsa - Cockatiel, Poot - Red Vented Bulbul
Hi all,

Just wanted to introduce myself and my pal Charlie the Sun Conure. I just got him a lil over a week ago at 3 weeks old. I have been hand feeding/raising him myself. He is so full of personality already. He has his special grunts and kinda screeching noise for all his needs. He grunts when he was to play and cuddle and has a different grunt when hes hungry. Too funny! My fiance is raising a lovebird the same way and is the same age as Charlie but when Charlie saw me holding the lovebird he lunged at the poor lil lovebird and tried to bite it. Charlie got jealous. Thats weird though as we had them housed together for the first week and grew to love eachother. The lovebird even thinks that Charlie is its mother or parent. I am new to conures as ive only raised and owned cockatiels, lovebirds and parakeets in the past. So, since I got him all I been doing is purchasing books and learning as much as I can online about Sun Conures. I hope to give him the most happy life possible and assure to raise a happy conure. Any tips are welcome!!!! :orange:

First pic is the night I adopted Charlie and the 2nd pic is as of yesterday and thats the lil lovebird. They is growing so fast!

I love that 2nd pic...how adorable!

Your new sun is beautiful...

I would love one, but I doubt I could take the noise! :)

Wow.. your sun has tons of yellow for being so young... Welcome to the forum :)

I don't think Charlie got jealous... He just saw the lovebird in a different environment...

I would keep them in separate cages, as they start to wean...

They are both gorgeous, by the way... :)

oooo goodness how cute!!! they are both darling!! welcome to the forums! I would keep them in side by side cages until they can become the best of friends

Thanks all for the welcome and listening to me ramble ahahah. He is such a cutie, my fiance says im obsessed with him. Cause all I do is surf the net reading and watching videos about sun conures. Im just trying to soak in all the info I can about them so that I can raise him well and properly communicate with him and read body language... etc... He hasnt been sexed, I just call him "him" lol whats the pros and cons of having them DNA sexed? A must or what?

And yes, after the first week I have seperated them. They play together and have meetings while supervised only. Its too funny sometimes. Benny the lovebird rushes to Charlie to cuddle under him and Charlie at times gets impatient with Benny cause hes trying to wiggle under Charlie. Then Charlie gets fustrated, its cute to see.

Thats exactly what I thought too! Must be intresting to watch him transform as he grows.

Sorry to sound like a "newby" hahaha but im trying to learn all I can. When you say Charlie saw him in a different environment, so why did Charlie act that way? Sorry! I just want to try and understand him and his actions.

They are both very cute!

Knowing the sex can be good in case of an emergency... i.e. males can't lay eggs! I have heard of a few supposed males rushed to the emergency because they weren't acting normal... only for said "male" bird had an egg! Actually recall a couple people who had "males" that laid eggs, so automatically assumed that the eggs were fertile... and other "males" that the owners were told to keep an eye on and if their behavior didn't improve, then to take them into an a-vet, only for these birds to lay eggs during the night!

Knowing the sex of your birds helps to prevent confusions like that! That said, I have an 18 year old conure that I have had for 6 years, and I haven't DNA sexed him! I would be extremely surprised myself if he decided to lay an egg one day! :D My previous conure I didn't DNA sex either, until after he passed away. I always assumed he was female (based on behaviors and vocalizations), but DNA said otherwise. Took me a while to stop saying "she" and "her", although even now, I sometimes catch myself saying the feminine words when talking about him.

Soooo cute! Both of them!

Charlie is off for his first vet check today. Just wanna get a clear bill of health and continue to do so yearly. I will hold off on sexing for now. But I'd figure I'll let y'all know. And I'll keep y'all updated when we get back. Thanks!

The babies are SO CUTE!!!!

Just makes me anxious to get my baby!! haha he's cute he looks like a little trouble maker i can tell! haha:)

That photo of the two of them is OMG-cuteness level.

More more more photos please.

Welcome to the forum. Keep us posted, and if you find out something interesting, funny, etc. in your tons of research, share it in a post.

They are just too cute!!! Unfortunately though, Charlie has a throat infection. The doc took him in weighed him and said his weight is pefect for his age. To make things short everything came out great other than his throat. When doc went to go look into his throat he said he has an infection. I almost cried right there, I had to hold it in. So then my lil Charlie is on antibiotics, probiotics and baytril. He kept commenting on how such a good bird he is and was behaving really well. I said ya! cause Ive been raising him since he was 3 weeks. lol. Doc said he wants to do a fallow up next week to see how Charlie is doing. One thing I was super upset about was that he gave Charlie a nail trim and cut 2 of them too short and made my Charlie bleed a lil. I was mad inside. UGH!!!! Charlie was such a good bird he just made a noise as if he was saying "ouch, watch it buddy!" and that was it, he did not try to get away or anything like that he just stood still. He is acting perfectly fine though. Doc did say that he should start weaning now. Which surprised me, cause the info I have gathered from allot of research was that they should be almost fully weaned by the age of 9 weeks. Charlie is only 5-6 weeks. Charlie does have an interest in other foods but he mainly just plays/shreds it and at times eats a lil. Doc did suggest to put the formula in a dish and have him eat it out of the dish instead of the syringe. So ya, Charlie is now on meds 2x a day for 14 days (13 now) my poor lil fellow. He doesnt seem to mind taking the meds. He takes them orally with a syringe with no problems, such a good sport huh! Thanks all and sorry for the ramble!!

OH! Because Charlie was such a good sport at the docs.. Today I recieved Paulie the movie in the mail from ordering online. So as a treat we will be watching Paulie as we lay on the sofa eating some fresh fruit. What a spoiled brat huh! hahahaha

It's priceless to know that your bird is healthy! And it sounds as if Charlie only has a slight infection that he'll surely get over quickly! Hope he enjoys the movie!
