This is Ruby. We met on Saturday and it was love at first sight...for me and my friend who went with me. My friend has nick named her...Ruber.

She's lovely Dopey, so I have to ask-does she have any female ekkie hormone attitude I keep hearing about? She looks so sweet, it doesn't seem possible. It makes me wonder if they get a bad rap or what the deal is.

Nope never dull. I have a flock. My family thought it was big with one...not all of them know about Ruber yet.

Can anyone tell what subspecies she is? I've looked in the book and I can't tell. I've ruled out some but not all of them. Any help would be appreciated BUT I don't need to know to love her.

We would need to know her weight, and would need more photos. Clear photos of her eyering, and photos of the length of her tail in comparison to where her flight feathers end.

You know she may have an attitude but I haven't seen it yet. She is sweet and has been to most everyone she meets. She had a little bit of an attitude with my son on Saturday but on Sunday she was okay with him.

She has one sound for when she wants to switch where she is and another sound for when she is scared. She has done the cat whistle for me once. I have not heard her talk yet.

Her feather quality is not great but I think with some correct diet and much needed baths she should be all slick and beautiful. It is rare for me to see or hear from people that bathe their eclectus as much as I think they need it. Around here it is every other day and every day while moulting.

Please keep me straight on this. I just tend to forget to do the bathing and do it once during the week and once on the weekend - but sometimes more. I don't have a fid yet that seems to like it. They just tolerate it.

The diet she was on was supposed to be one of veggies and fruits and then a pellet Ekkie mix. Kathy from My Safe Bird Store sent me some things for her but I just got them yesterday.

Please what is the correct way to feed my Ekkie?

She isn't plucked or looking like she is missing feathers, they just look dull especially down her back if you look at some of the pics I have posted of Jillie you will be able to see what I am saying. They just should be more slick and shiny. I am sure you will get her there with diet and baths.

You really should look into getting your own gram scale. Weights should be taken in the morning before breakfast on a fairly regular basis and jotted down for future reference. With you having so many birds that are new to you having a base line weight on them will help you determine if all is well.

I have a gram scale. It got moved into another room a couple of months ago (okay - at Christmas) and I just forget about it. I used to weigh my fids a least once a week.

You are right...her feathers are fluffy not sleek. She is such a sweet thing she deserves to have the right kind of life. I want to be the person to give that to her. Do you think she would be happier with a boy friend? Ummm, not, just tell me the right way to take care of her.

Yesterday I got her green beans, corn on the cob, apple, oranges, bell peppers, strawberries, and cucumber. This morning I gave her green beans and some baked potato cut up. I gave her about a 1/2 cupful. Tonight I will give her some fruit. She has pellets in her bowl throughout the day. What should I change?

There are so many great food related posts here as well as on Land Of Vos, I don't do pellets at all with eclectus. The Golden'obles that are shaped like cheerios are fun to string or use in foraging toys but I don't feed them in a bowl.

The majority of her diet should be fresh with Volkman's eclectus seed given at night.

Not sure I am doing this link right but I posted a list of chop ingredients, so if the link doesn't work just look in my post history and you should find it.
Leafy greens (dark) are a MUST with eclectus like Kale, Dandelion, Collard greens as well as vitamin A rich foods.
What you gave her is not nearly enough variety, again there are tons of great ideas for feeding her correctly both here and on land of vos. You have much reading in front of you grasshopper.

Been doing the reading...forgot to make chop this past weekend...I was busy building a fence (still am). Seriously, she needs all of that variety everyday? I thought I could give it to her throughout the week. So the best thing to do would be to forget what her owners told me and do it the "chopped" way?

I guess since her feathers need some cleaning up I answered my own question.

No the stuff (pellets) that look like cheerios are made by Goldenfeast and as I said I mainly give those once in a while as more toy type food (foraging). I give no other pellets to eclectus I do not feel they do well on them over the long haul. You will need to make changes but also provide her a small amount of what she has been eating so that you make sure she is getting enough. Eclectus are big eaters especially the girls. Dig that scale out, diet changes it is really necessary to weigh regularly.
