my darling lovebird
i had a whole lot of wood scraps at home, and i thought bamoo would like them. so i hung them around his cage, and he loved it!! he kept chewing them continuously for at least an hour. but im sort of scared if its safe for him. its just normal wood, like plywood. you know, those curly thin peels kind of scraps.im afraid he hurt his little budgie be thanks anyways!!:greenyellow:

I think the biggest concern is what wood the shavings came from. Safe wood would create safe shavings. Now, whether *shavings* are a good idea, I am not so sure? Hopefully someone more knowledgable will come along to tell us.

I would definitely not give my bird or any animal any wood that came from plywood, or from any wood that is used for building or construction as it is most likely chemically treated. The only wood you should give any animal is wood bought from a trusted source that is for pets, or wood from a safe plant or tree that you know is not poisonous AND has not been sprayed with insecticide. Cassie I think it's a bad idea. Almost all wood is chemically treated.

ouch!! gonna take it out right now. thanks gary!

Gary's right- if you're not 100% positive that the wood is A] untreated B] a safe wood or C] pesticide free...then don't give it to your bird.

It has to be NON PRESSURE TREATED lumber...

Also, since we are talking about plywood, and plywood is glued, and we don't know what glue was used, (though I assume most wood glues are harmless) I would stay away from plywood and particle board materials.

yeah. point. but seeing hes not eating it....

Are you 100% positive he's not eating it...??? IMHO I wouldn't risk it..

Even if he is not actually swallwing it, he could still be ingesting nasties from the surface of the wood while he's tongueing it like they do before each bite.

aw man!! i don wanna take it out, he loves it so much :( but. yeah i will

ya it might be a bit unsafe as the wood scraps can get suck in her paws

I would definitely not give a bird any kind of wood, except for the kind that various perches are made from. Cedar shavings, for example, are way too risky, and so would other woods such as balsa, cedar, and some others, if the bird tends to eat them.

I used unwaxed white paper for the bottom of her cage, which I put over Aziza's cage grating.
