I need to install some curtain rods ASAP in my condo so that 'Nut has something to land on. I do not like curtains and will never actually use curtains but I have always made sure to install curtain rods so that my tiels have a safe place to land on. Plus, if I don't have a curtain rods installed then they land on top of the rail that holds my blinds and poop on my expenive blinds! Curtain rod is a must!.. that prevents that from happening and keeps them safe as they have a place to land :)

If I get brushed nickel curtain rods... that's not toxic to them is it? I just want plan/simple rods like this:

https://www.wayfair.com/Wayfair-Bas...d-Hardware-Set-WFBS1647.html?piid[0]=18913884

Only problem is that all the rods I have looked at thus far are super slippery! :(

'Nut loves to hang out on the curtain rod.... right now I don't have curtain rods in my new condo and it's a problem...

So sorry I should have researched more before I posted. I see that metal components such as nickel or chrome plated are considered safe for them, my bad. :02:

OMG. This is REALLY scary cockatiel has heavy metal posioning. I will never let me tiel near a pencil or paper clips again!
Horrible I feel so bad for this bird lots of vieos on youtbe of birds with heavy metal positonin. This bird eventually recovered thank goodness:

I HOPE steel is safe? If I get a steel curtain rod? Paper clips and staples are made out of steel and they are not safe?... so I can assume steel curtain rods are a no no...? I heard of tiels getting heavy metal poisoning from chewing on staples?

I'm allergic to nickel, makes me break out like poison ivy if I touch it. Can birds have metal sensitivities? I took Birdman666's advice and got came-print Gorilla Tape to wrap the perches. It lasts longer than vet wrap, is easy to clean, and durable. Maybe you could wrap a curtain rod with something like that?

I had wooden curtain rods before I moved into this condo last month but those rods don't fit my window in this condo. I could buy new wooden rods? Mayabe that would be best. They never chewed the rod or anything because it was smooth and didn't interest them...

I had taped up my shower rail in previous house with duct tape and they chewed the heck out of the tape :(

I will have to try the tape you were using instead...

I just read that many paper clips contain zinc, and other cheap metals that can be toxic... so paper clips and staples are a no no.

I was going to try these "brushed nickel rods" but then it says it is steel and zinc... what the heck? It says it is constructed of "Constructed of plated steel and cast zinc "... I guess the coating is brushed nickel?? If so, then it should be OK?

After seeing so many videos of birds on youtube with heavy metal poisoning now I am extra paranoid!

If possible, I would say, best to stick with wood! Remember, you can pick up dowels at Home Depot!

Another option is untreated bamboo or rattan. Boop! Bamboo and Rattan Poles

Cool! Thanks for the link.... my guess is that it's untreated bamboo? I just sent an email to that company to ask them if their bamboo rods (rattan poles with skin) are 100% untreated because I have a feeling 'Nut is going to try to chew on it.... he won't chew on the brushed nickel but this bamboo I have feeling he is going to try to chew on it... or maybe he won't... not sure... if it's untreated bamboo then it's no worries :)

It is the rattan poles with skin you think I should get? I like it's tropical look.

I LOVE tropical things and that certainly looks tropical :)

I looked at these wooden curtain rods but they are all stained etc... wouldn't that make it unsafe?

I'm going to check out the dowels you mentioned at Home Depot... thanks for the suggestion! I didn't even realize they have stuff like that and going to check out those bamboo rods mentioned in this thread by Teddscau... it will also be less slippery than those brushed nickel ones :)

What about a window perch?

I'm only installing these rods above my 2 sliding glass doors.... they are huge in length... the one in living room is 12 inches in length and the one in my bedroom is about 9 feet in length :) The rod must be this loooong length otherwise they will land on my vertical blinds railing and poop all over it! With a rod above it like I had in my other home it prevents this completely... so they land on the rod... not the blinds.

... then installing one above my office where there is no window (so it will be a wall perch rather than a window perch)... I'll show pic once it's done as it's difficult to explain :57:

Awesome projects! Hdepot also has railings, unfinished! Check out their trim dept, many ideas! Remember, you can always splice lengths together with tubing!

LOL check this out... bamboo curtain rods already exist... go figure! https://decor.basicq.com/cgi-bin/dcart/bamboo_poles.html

I'm certainly going to check out the dowels at Home Depot but I really love the look of bamboo... so hoping to get the bamboo rods. I will post pics once installed.

'Nut is going to love hanging out on it! :D

Yes crazy isn't it... lots of videos like that on youtube :(

OMG!!! Almost $600 for this bamboo rod... say what!!!??? I don't understand why this is so expensive?

https://www.houzz.com/photos/10747273/Bamboo-Drapery-Rod-102-asian-curtain-rods

I am looking around as I wait for the other company who I emailed yesterday to reply and finding cheaper ones thankfully... but it looks like I simply need to buy a bamboo rod... NOT one advertised as a "curtain rod" because then they jack up the prices!

DIY bamboo curtian rods is more like it :) http://homeguides.sfgate.com/yourself-bamboo-curtain-rods-89174.html

Cool! Check this out Home Depot sells the bamboo poles and it's only four bucks! :D https://www.google.com/shopping/pro...jzDcMTlU_GZtdL8ilsWQtVit6cxarkQNBFhoC8nfw_wcB

I HOPE those bamboo rods Home Depot is selling is 100% bamboo and nothing else and hasn't been treated/coated with anything.

I have bad news regarding the bamboo this website is selling: http://www.franksupply.com/bamboo/rattan-poles.html :(

They said the following:

"The bamboo poles come in 12 ft lengths and the rattan in 9 ft lengths.
Neither are treated however they are porous and can have contamination like mold.
I recommend a lite finish be applied before use."

.... so I guess it's not safe for my tiels or is it??

I just went to Home Depot and Lowe's and unfortunately they do not sell individual bamboo poles... they only sell massive ones that are an actual fence with wiring holding them together already (already formed fence). The bamboo they had was also a butt ugly yellowish color :(

I looked at their dowels and they only had pine dowels.... I read in this link that pine is not safe for tiels unless it is an actual branch but once modified into a dowel for example it is no longer safe??? Bird; Birds: Safe, Toxic Trees, Woods. Safe Tree Wood. Parrots. Parrot cages. It also says" Lumber wood information Pressure injected wood: don’t use it for birds: perches, toys or structures." Also says: If you like to make your own toys NEVER use pressure treated wood, it is treated with arsenic and will poison your bird.

This is seriously driving me nuts! LOL

If I get a brushed nickel rod and it is super slippery... and my tiel is flying VERY fast and attempts to land on the rod could he potentially slip right off the rod and slam his head into the wall?????

This is why I would rather NOT get such a super slippery rod such as the brushed nickel... going nuts here! :52:

I would be happy getting a pine dowels (since it is less slippery) from Home Depot if that is SAFE??? They only had pine ones... no other types of wood. Their oak dowels were very short and I read oak is toxic to them...

I can always use PVC pipe and just wrap it in vet wrap? This way it's not slippery! This would also be cheap solution... and vet wrap comes in cool colors :D

EDIT: Sorry please disregard this idea... my tiels would chew the vet wrap like CRAZY!

I found company who sells bamboo poles and they said they are 100% bamboo (untreated)... they told me they have people in Houston who use this bamboo in their home and they have birds They also sell black bamboo which is naturally brownish in color... I think I'm going to get this black bamboo:
