July 2025 Photo Of The Month Contest!!! 💖

The Rickeybird is the least agile parrot I know, so his accomplishments are mostly in his mind...

OFFICIAL ENTRY (God help us)

Official Entry - Scout climbing around the bottom shelf thing of the Budgie cage. She is the one who still can't fly, but can climb around fast.

Why can't Scout fly? Haven't her wings grown back? My budgie Joey couldn't fly until she was 7 months old and after she had laid her first clutch of eggs (replaced by dummies)! I had done what I always do when one of the babies I'm hand raising first fledges and slightly shorted her longest flight feathers to prevent injury while learning their newest ability. I may have cut a bit too much (I'm so sorry, baby!) but it never stopped Rocky or Tiki. Joey couldnt seem to figure out how to get forward motion instead of just flapping and going mostly just up and back down again. She was content to sit on our shoulders. Finally, at seven months, after her first molt was almost complete, she figured it out and now flies like a fighter pilot at 9 months old. It's too bad in a way, because her utter lack of flight allowed us to walk down the hallways of my mom's retirement community with Joey sitting safely on our shoulders to the delight of the other residents. Scout may just be a slow learner like Joey was.

Her wings were clipped by someone before we got her, as with most of our "rescued" pet store Budgies. We've owned her for 8 months, so she must be 10+ months old now. I remember that it took a while for Thunder to fly (someone had clipped his wings way too short), although I can't remember if it took this long. Hopefully she is just a slow learner, like you said.

She can climb fast and she has no problem telling Freya, the Boss Hen, to back off. Maybe she will be the new Boss (first it was Willow, then Misfit, then Freya).

Are her wings fully grown in yet? She may have been clipped so severely that she couldn't get any lift at all like Joey could and stopped trying. I suspect that at some point Scout will figure out that she CAN fly, perhaps by accident if she falls and starts instinctively flapping. I know that once Joey got the hang of it she took off like a shot!

They look grown to me, but I will try to take a picture later/tomorrow and share. She has fallen a few times and flapped her wings while falling.

Here is Button’s official entry for his expert level of spinning in circles. 😊
Awwwwwwwww, I love this! All the gracefulness of a champion figure skater, and look at that big smile on his little face too!! 😍 Thank you for your entry, @nkrbkr and Button!!

And, just for fun, here’s Ava spinning too. She’s a novice and making her goofy begging sounds, but I’m proud of how well she’s doing.

Ava will have that spinning thing nailed in no time, @nkrbkr, and I hope she keeps up with the vocal accompaniment too!

Well sports fans, the Games have entered their final week, or the "bell lap" as it were. Still plenty of time to get your entries in, and what better herald could there be than beautiful Peachie ringing the bell?!
