Greenwing macaw
My husband and I just adopted this amazing greenwing last night. We do not know the sex of him or her, but shes about 13 and id say shes 18 because of the number on hwr bamd
She was never caged and was previously owned by a pilot then for "several years" by the people we got her from. She doesnt fly and sits on her manzantina (sp) stand and is very friendly and goes to anybody. She likes to cuddle with my husband and since I'm nervous around birds I've only held her once, when she kind of asked me to. We were home alone her and I and I went into the other room and she squaked for her first time. I knew she needed something and wemt to talk to her and she put her foot up so I asked her if she wanted to step up. She tried and got nervous because my arms are skinny and she is very heavy!!! But we worked it out, I walked around with her amd she wanted to go on my shoulder but I thought it was a bad idea since I've been told by several bird peoe to never allow a new bird near your face. Shes really a great bird thougg and I cant believe how lucky we are to have her! Im certainly in love and hope I'll become more confident with her. :red1:

Hi and welcome to the forum! Hope you have a good time here! :)

Congrats on getting her! She is beautiful!

Yes, don't let a new parrot near your face, especially a macaw, they can do some bad damage!

And just to let you know, don't walk back to her when she squeak, you can teach her to scream for attention. Which will be hard to solve once it's learnt.

What a beautiful Greenwing!!!! What did you guy named him/her?

Don't worry about being a little nervous, many people are at first but after a year or two you'll be amazed at how much you know and understand you new bird.

My personal rule with birds on shoulders is to only put a bird there if you're capable of taking a bite from them. A macaw could do severe damage and I would never put one on my shoulder. My Galah's beak size is the limit for me, she can give a very painful bite if she wants but it's unlikely to be very destructive. I also make sure to wear my glasses to protect my eyes.

Congratulations, they are the best!! ;)

I shoulder mine, but that's only cause I ain't got no sense.:D Mine are pretty good when on me 95% of the time......It's that 5% ya gotta worry about! :54: Also I have absolutely no fear of them either having raised/weaned them from babies, but you have to be VERY attentive and vigilant with them on you. Even my breeder doesn't shoulder hers and advises against it. (told ya I ain't got no sense):30:

We are trying to find out if shes a male or female but I hit a brick wall with her band so we'll have her dna sexed. My 9 year old is fascinated with her and she "asked" to step up by raising her foot to him so my husband assisted and she was sooo happy she made a delighted sound right when she got comfy on him. :)

Congrats on your new bird. she or he is beautiful welcome to the forum:)
