My husband wanted African grey for a long time. We were searching for a good breeder to buy a baby in a next 6 months or so, but then I found a parrot for rehoming. The owner was not that far from us, so we decided to choose the adoption. After 4 hrs drive I found this poor bird sitting in the extremely dirty and rust small cage. I think this cage was not get cleaned for at least a year or longer. It is certainly did not have any toys inside or even something to sit on. The bird literally had to sit on the floor on his own excrements. The diet of the bird was also very unique: the family was feeding their pet with chocolates, cookies, cakes and other human food with high sugar consistency. The actual parrot food was not found, however the bird was active and looked fine (for mine non-professional eye). I could not turn away and leave the parrot to continue living like that. I do not know much about African Grey, only from what I read, when I was doing my research for the breed and getting ready to get one. Nevertheless I believe from what I saw, the bird did not bond to her owner because of the lack of attention or any sort of communication. What would you recommend to help the bird to rehabilitate. Well, any recommendations will be highly appreciated. Thank you very much for attention.

Poor Grey. :( So glad you could save her. I have no advice other than I would take her straight away to a good avian vet for a complete blood workup. I adopted an amazon in deplorable conditions like that once (the owners had kept her on a porch in a tiny "parakeet" cage, fed her pigeon food, pizza, cake, and fast food for YEARS). She was okay, just high cholesterol, which came down after a switch to a healthy diet, which took about a year and was another story. Good luck with her. As a Grey owner, you will really enjoy life with a Grey. They are like living with a colleague, not just a pet.

Poor baby. :( First on the agenda is definitely a real cage, appropriate food, perches of different sizes, toys (maybe not too many at first, poor baby might not know what to do with too much), a vet check, and lots of love and care.

Hopefully she isn't too messed up from living like that. I will never understand why people think it's ok to treat a bird (or any pet or human) like that. They're animals and feel just like we do. I sure wouldn't want to live in a tiny cramped space filled with crap (literally crap!) How bad did it smell? I know when I got sick and let my guys cages go they got a bit smelly. I can't even imagine a cage that filthy.

As soon as I come in I felt this aromate. This people don't know how to clean after themselves, what to expect((((

I love reading stories like this. I dont love the fact that the bird was treated like such, but the great news of someone "saving" this bird! Please keep us posted.

Thank you for taking in they grey.... post some pictures....
we love pictures.. What is her/his name?
Like was said... get her/him to a good avian vet asap and have all the test run.... then just love her/him.

I am proud of you! Seems to me that this bird finally found a decent home and a good family to care for him. Wish you a very good luck!!

We took Larry to the vet, he is healthy and everything is fine. He is stepping up on my arm with no problem, let me pet him and eats from hands. Larry loves to hang around me and my husband. I think he prefers my husband a little more, but I hope is will change with time. He is still very silent though, no notice at all. Thank you guys for respond and support;) ImageUploadedByTapatalk1359236736.895332.webp

Ok, I saw that you were from Cleveland, Ohio. I live in Lima, Ohio. Did you happen to adopt your grey from around here? I'm curious because last week I saw an add on Craigslist for a little Timneh African Grey with a rehoming fee of $100. I tried to talk my husband into getting it but he said he didn't think we had adequate room right now for another bird. I was wondering if this is the same Grey that I wanted to get. You are located three to four hours from me. Even if it's not the same one I'm happy to know that this little Grey got a good home and will no longer have to live with a neglectful owner.

This one was from port Huron, it's a little a bit past Detroit

At least he is healthy so the family must have done something right at least. If he was just eating junk, he wouldn't be healthy!!! I went to a place not far from there, the guy was really strange and we have to ride in his car to go to the place where he kept the birds. They were in absolute filthy conditions with poop sky high and 100's of flies in the trailer where they were being kept. I no longer see him posting on craigslist cause I think they've been all taken away from him....

So glad you have taken the bird in, bless you

He will now thrive, as he is now living a wonderful life with caring loving guardians
Wishing you many many years of happiness

OMGSH! He's so cute! He looks great, despite his former conditions. Great job taking him in. I hope he brings endless joy to you guys! I love African Grays. :)

Ugh....how could that guy do that?! And live like that, knowing that's how they are being kept? I guess he doesn't care, since he's the one doing it....

I hope they were all taken away from him! He doesn't deserve them!
