Okay so I just got a conure, on the advert it said it was hand reared but it was quite obvious it was not when I saw it, but it was very tame so as it wasn't biting or screaming etc. I bought it home a few hours ago and it was biting quite a lot, which is understandable as it's nervous, however I just saw that it's wings are taped??? And that's why it wasn't flying around etc

Hi, I will try to take a picture afterwards but for now I found one on the internet so you understand

He used a clear tape so you can hardly even see it

Didn't see your other question, located in UK

My guess(GUESS), those are his flight feathers! Instead of clipping them off, grounding the bird, it looks like they taped them to keep him from flying for now!
If so, it won't take much for your new guy to pull that off,,,but he may damage his feathers doing so!

Remember to have your environment bird safe, single room, windows covered, pets away! Do you have the ability to contact the seller?

Yeah you are right about that, but doesn't that put it under a lot of stress? And I can't even untape it as it will hurt it or his feather could be broken

Hang in just a bit, there are folks online that do know what they are taking about!

Never seen that before! I would GUESS you towel him, cut the tape and let him try and remove the pieces. SAILBOATS - little help here.

Can you post a photo of your bird, the whole face and the wing? Is there a leg band? Some poachers capture wild birds, bind them, pack them in containers, smuggle them in, and tranquilize them to keep them quiet during the process. I wouldn't put it past an unscrupulous person to do something similar in order to sell a stolen or wild caught bird.

That is breathtakingly.... horrific! Whatever the reason for taping, it should have been "explained" by the seller. Perhaps moistening the area first might aid in removal?

I would also take your conure to the vet for a well-check. While I am unfamiliar with the taping of feathers, perhaps a local specialist might understand the context, if any.

Okay, I don't think it is a wild bird because he did have more and I will take more pics afterwards and post them.

Taping is an old school way of preventing flight without clipping the feathers. It allows for a more "pretty" appearance as all of the feathers remain in tact while destroying the bird's ability to fly. It's awful and does so much damage to the wings and their structure. If you can, try to cut the tape off of the wings and ever so carefully remove it. Alternatively, take your bird to a vet to have them remove it or clip your bird's wings.

I never cease to be stunned and disgusted by the things people do to birds. THANK YOU for rescuing this poor dear. I'm glad you found us, and I'm grateful you're reaching out. Please stick with us and we'll help.

Yeah exactly, I asked the guy why he taped it and he said for "reassurance" as people in the past have let them out in the garden and the bird had flied away... clearly a lie

This, I believe! Stupid is as stupid does! You can fix ignorance, but you can't fix stupid!

that tape is bull****. I would never ever ever put tape on my birds feathers - better to just clip the feathers. i'm guessing you're not trained to safely catch and safely restrain a bird while grooming. so I would as soon as possible take the bird to a qualified groomer, doesn't have to be a vet but can be, and just clip those primaries, stupid tape and all.

I have never seen or even heard of this before! Good luck in getting this off ASAP.

Thanks everyone, I just wanted to know how long will it take her to get used to me? As it is still quite scared and is biting If handled and when I went to get her, she was very friendly and tame.
