Kiwi Stardust - a green cheek conure
Hi all!!

The last time I weighed kiwi (2 weeks ago) she was 72 grams..Today she weighed 68 grams!! Appetite hasn't changed..still eating her mash, and cleaning out her pellets..and the additional treats (seeds, nutriberries) Should I be worried?

How old is Kiwi? Are you keeping Kiwi flighted?

At anytime you have deep concern of your pets, you should always have them checked out by a vet as we can only speculate on here! They can turn for the worse in a very short time if there is something wrong with them!

I wouldn't be too worried, unless it was a huge amount in loss. Did you weigh her on the same scale each time? When I took Rio to the vet she weighed 110 grams, which is low for a Senegal. But we checked the meat of each side of her keel bone, she felt fine. She is young (6 mos.) and petit. I weighted her with my scale about a week later and she was 108 grams. But she feels fine, is eating good, droppings are good. So don't worry too much, but feel the meat on each side of her keel. If the keel is not protruding she is probably fine.

If I was in your place I would make a log and weigh her once every hour tomorrow, write everything down, and examine the results. It's possible you normally weigh her when she has a good amount of food in her and with less food she weighs less. Rosie's weight fluctuates between 275-305 depending on how much she's been eating. 275 is her empty weight(although I think it's gone back up to 280), and 305 is when she's stuffed herself completely full and her crop is very noticible.

I agree with Mickey though, if you feel there is something wrong get her checked out

Thanks guys! I will do a weight log and give my vet a call as well. Kiwi thanks you as well..although she is a little embarrassed that I've discussed her weight in public 0.0

(kiwi is 6.5 months old, and she is not flighted..although we are working on it!)

Naw, poor, shy little Kiwi! Hope all turns out ok! She's such a cutie.

You are feeding too much protein, she needs more fruits and some cereal grains instead of oil seeds or pellets.

The vet says not to worry as she is within the weight she should be, but to continue with the log as advised by you guys - that's a great tip thanks!

He also advised that pellets are good to have in her cage all day in case she gets hungry. She does get a fresh veggie and fruit mash for breakfast and dinner, and her seeds and nutriberries are less than a teaspoon a day, if anything (fed as rewards for tricks)

Ohyeah..he mentioned feeling around that bone on her tummy and it feels nice and round to me ^.^ (sorry kiwi)

Good to hear! I log my bird's weight every morning (or i skip a few days) when he wakes up, right after he does his epic poop. That way I know it's always close to his base weight. I get more consistent readings that way.
