When I bought him, they said he was a male. What do you guys think? And sorry about the last picture, the flash makes me squint :/

How old is kou? very cute pics and thanks for sharing . I do not have enough experience with cockateils but I am sure someone will be along to help:)

It looks like a female to me. Female cockatiels have lighter orange cheeks and little yellow on their head, while the males have a full yellow head (for normal grey cockatiels). But if it's still very young, it can turn out to be a male.

The only way to be 100% sure is DNA test :)

Not sure of the age, I think they said he/she was weaned in December if I remember right.

Looks female. She's so adorable all snuggled up with you like that. Cockatiels are so sweet and peaceable. :)

I agree, female. Cheeks look light colored to me.

i agree with LoveMyParrots, and its a myth that female cockatiels dont talk as well they talk just as good as males! :) she/he is very pretty!

I swore Newman was a female at first. He was dropped off at a pet store by a girl who was allergic, so I really didn't know his age, just that he was young. The girl thought he was a female too, and named him Sweetie. Well, his color changed quite a bit since I got him 7 years ago, I can now tell that he is a male, and he talks all the time.

Kou should be about five months old? Give or take...

You should know for sure within another 7 months whether Kou is male or female.

Do you have any pictures with Kou's wings spread out?

Babies and females have the scallop feather coloring under the wings. Once your baby reaches adulthood if the scallops go away with a molt then you have a male.

Oh my goodness, what an adorable little birdy. I love tiels, their little nose holes and their fancy tails make me smile.

I wouldn't say it's a myth -- it's rare to find a female cockatiel that whistles, let alone talks! There are some out there, but it's not at all common. But girls have their own charm of course. :) Kou is very cute!

Thank you, I was just wishing it was a boy, since I can't whistle myself means I can't ever really teach it much lol

It can be hard to say why a cockatiel is making a particular noise without being able to see everything that's going on around the bird.

There is a theory that you can sex a cockatiel by the wing spots when at a young age. It's not 100% accurate, but it's a 50/50 chance. At a young age, males supposedly have spots on their primary flights and secondary flights are clear. Females on the other hand will have spots on primaries and secondaries. As adults, males lose their spots and hens lose the spots on the secondaries.

On top or bottom of the wings?
