I still keep my birds and dogs separated at all times. A slight flap of wings and the dogs are all ERMAHGERD BIRDDDDDD and I can only imagine the horror that would ensue if birds + dogs were loose at the same time lol.
Chloe is okay with my Conure, because I had both of them in the living room together at one stage and she got her nose too close to him and he licked it, to which she responded with a snort and retreated back to her bed. I couldn't ever trust her to not have him as a snack (revenge noms) if I wasn't looking though.
The birds go outside in their outdoor cages when it's nice out, and the dogs leave them alone out there. I have the outdoor bird cages all lined up against the side of the house with a fence of sorts in front of them, and the dogs generally stay away from it. I can leave them all outside without any trouble now. And i've noticed that my Conure and the dogs kind of work as an anti-cat team. I was outside hanging washing one day and I heard Bandit screaming out this god awful warning call, and then saw the dogs come running and chase off a cat perched up on the neighbours fence, closest to the bird cages. Once it was gone they all went about their business. I've heard this happen a couple of times while I was inside, too. Bandit's ear-piercing warning call, a few unfriendly 'wuffs' from the dogs, then silence. It's funny how a mutual hatred for the same thing brings people (for lack of better word) together lmao.
My dogs like to spend most of their time outside so the when the birds are in during the day, they get the run of the house, and everyone is caged when the dogs are due back in. Mostly the dogs just watch them with fascination but that's as far as I allow it to get, so if I need to be out of the room and all critters are in, I put the dogs in the kitchen behind a baby gate just to be safe.
