Button- 3yo peach-faced lovebird (opaline turquoise ino)
Ava- 8yo Amazon hybrid (yellow-crowned x yellow-shouldered)
This little lady is learning to forage. I stuffed some almond chunks in pine cones for her. What do your Amazons like to chew on? So far, I’ve found that Ava likes a bit softer materials. Balsa is her favorite, but she seems to like yucca & thinner pieces of pine as well. She’s not a hard chewer in general, but sure likes to take chunks out of the ends of her Java perch once in a while.

OOooooh! I need something like that for Yvons and Vortex! They're my devoted foragers, LOL!

Nameliss enjoys foraging. It keeps her busy. She doesn't care for pinecones. But she loves to demolish a corn cob after she's stripped the corn. Interactive toys are her ultimate love.

Untreated pine, and heavy cardboard. Pine cones, wine corks, and tongue depressors are destruction treats

Just received these, along with a bunch of loose parts for making my own large balsa toys for Ava. The toy on the right has been one of her favorites so far, so I got a couple. It’s yucca & pine. The toy on the left is balsa.

That's similar to what Nameliss likes. Her preference is to be able to slide objects for ease in carving.

Does anyone know how to sanitize pine cones? It’s the only thing my Ekkie regularly plays with. There’s fresh pine cones where I live.

I don’t want an infestation of bugs in my house. I overwatered some plants, and had a bunch of Gnats. I’m not a fan!

Fungus gnats from watering plants are a definite pain. You don't even have to 'over water' for them to show up. What did you do to get rid of them? I put double sided tape (scotch) where they swarmed. Kinda messy but it didn't take long.

I think you can heat treat them (bake them) after cleaning them, but you’d have to look up the temperature/overall process. Just be certain there are no pesticides used on cones either.

I was not successful in getting rid of them. I ended up bringing the plants to the brush dump in my area. I had to start from scratch. I did try replanting them, using tape stripes, and using a natural repellent (these plants are around my parrots I didn’t think a pesticide would be healthy for them). The natural repellent had a horrifically strong peppermint smell. I’m not sure that’s good for parrots (or me) either. I had to put them in the garage until the scent died down. I had to open my windows to use fans, and borrow fans from others to get this smell to calm down in my house. It took 24-48 hours.

I was wondering. It took a few weeks to get rid of them passively. Was hoping for a faster bird safe way.
