Male Sun Conure -Cozmo, Male Cockatiel - Oliver (1989-2013) RIP buddy
Cozmo is about a Sun Conure about 4 months old and when I bought him from the breeder he had a leg band. It seems like he chews on it a lot and I don't know if it's because it bothers him or if it's because it's just something to chew on. Since you were all so helpful to me in one of my other posts I was wondering how you felt about leg bands and if I should think about taking him to a vet to get it taken off.

I dont like them I have heard way to many stories about how someones bird died because they hung themselves on their leg band. Also they may chew on it and hurt themselves its just too risky in my opinion I suggest get it removed by a vet its really hard to cut it yourself.

I don't think leg bands matter, I wish there was a better way to keep track of birds other than leg bands and microchips.

Neither of mine have leg bands, I actually got both of Rosie's removed since they were causing her problems

Only my mitred conure has a leg band, and he's had it since he was banded. He is, or will be, 19 years old this year.

If you think the leg band is a safety hazard, get it removed!

Pepper had a band by the time I got him but last time I saw the vet he offered to remove it. Next time I think I'll have him do it because he's one conure you can't miss and I don't plan on getting a second bird while I have him either.

Several of my birds have their leg bands, but I do watch them very closely!!!! I once had a female budgie that hurt her foot and her foot swelled up and the leg band caused the blood flow to the foot and eventually killing the foot and we had to have her foot amputated. So leg band can be very dangerous and I'm highly against it, because of that incident, I refuse to band my babies when I used to breed.

Get it removed. I rescued a CBC conure from a (?) breeder who had him and he got his leg band caught in the cage bars and he broke it in 2-3 places trying to free himself. The leg was never set and it has healed back grossly wrong. My avian vet said bands are not a good idea and we had it removed. Please remove it before something happens.

leg bands are like symbols. owners who sell large quantities of birds put leg bands in order for them to determine that this bird for example is theirs. it is also a way for consumers to know that it came from this distinguishable consumer. most leg bands were seen in pigeon racing for the owners to determine which is which. this is also a data for some people to know that this kind f bird, which let us say, had lost, has been owned by someone and they should look for the owner.. for me leg band is not good cause i'tll just cause problem

Thanks everyone for your comments I reallly appreciate it. The next time I take him to the vet I'm going to have it removed.

All valid comments but if you ever need to travel internationally with your parrot being banded will make things much easier.
