Hello hello back!!

It's been long I haven't been in this forum!! Happy to be back.

As some people might now I am the owner of Mambo the BFA and Samba the Ekkie.

Well well, I somehow managed to find myself with a baby lorikeet (someone found him abandoned.... how inhumane). I am not an expert in lorikeets, so a bit of help and general info would help me.

What I wanted to ask is that I realized that Tango (that's the name I gave him/her!!) "Screeches" when you approach him. He doesn't look scared cause he wants to be with me all of the time, but I wonder what this sound means. Maybe a baby sound searching for his parents???

Anyways, I'm back and ow I'm the father of 3.... the last of them... Tango.... looks like the energy of a redbull mixed with a monster.... wish me luck!

Oh jousze, you certainly know how to make a re-entrance, don’t you! How awful that the poor little thing was abandoned, thank goodness you took him in. Congratulations on your new little family member – I will guarantee you that you will be in for an adventure with this one!

I’m presuming Tango is a rainbow lorikeet? Baby rainbows do make a pretty constant screeching noise, it will be a flock call as well a call to be fed, which in the wild would of course mean more attention from and bonding with parent birds and the wider flock. I’m not sure what you’re feeding, but ideally you should make both a “wet” and “dry” nectar mix available – I fed my Lilly wet mix for no more than about 3 or 4 hours each morning because it can spoil very quickly, and then gave her dry powdered nectar mix for the rest of the day. Do not be tempted to feed pellets that are made for lorikeets. These were invented just for humans' convenience more than anything, and are really not good for lorikeets, as their whole digestive system is geared towards a nectar diet, and they will just end up making your lori feel like he is constipated the whole time. If it was me, I’d be trying to keep fruit to a minimum too, as they are just not active enough in captivity to burn off all that extra sugar. You can feed leafy green vegetables instead for fresh food.

It's probably a good idea to have Tango checked out for wellness by an avian vet as soon as is practicable too. They should be able to give you an idea as to his age, or indeed whether he is male or female as it’s pretty much impossible to tell just from appearance, and this information will become important later on as he or she reaches sexual maturity.

Looking forward to seeing some photos soon jousze, and it’s good to have you and your flock back with us!

Welcome back Jousze!
I know very little about Lorikeets, but LaManuka who posted before me is quite experienced and I know she will be able to help you.
I'm just glad to see you and your now expanded flock back with us:)

Thanks for your answer. Yes so I have wet and dry mix. The wet one I just do it when I'm there, I leave it for a bit then remove it and I add the dry mix. However, is it normal that the dry mix is a powder??? It's strange for me to see a bird eating "dust"😂.

I give him sometimes fruit, however, he's starting to eat and he likes vegetables better...
Oh and don't worry, he burns the energy...... as he drains mine!!!

I've been to the vet and done some tests, the rest of the tests will have to wait a little bit as they told me he's to young for draining blood. We assume he's 2months old give or take. He's still not having his long tail, but it's growing.

In a shop they recommended me little colorful balls, I assume they are pellets, however I refused it, I had already read they are no good at all.

For his screech, he does it mostly when he's hungry, but he does it as well later one when he wants attention... is this what you mean? I was always scared that he is scared of me or something..

Anyway, he is separated from the other birds but they can see him anyway, they are sooooooo curious. I look forward letting them be together. I hope Samba will not want to kill him.... as she does with Mambo🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Anyway, happy to be back!

And it's good to have you back too, jousze! It sounds like you are doing pretty much everything right! I'm shocked that Tango is so young, how terrible for him to be abandoned like that :(

Yes he will be screeching both for food and for your company. Lorikeets live in very large social flocks in the wild so Tango won't like being left alone, particularly as he's so very young. Bravo for avoiding the pellets, they are no good! And yes, the dry mix just looks like powder so that is normal - it's a good idea to keep his water dish well separated from his food too because lorikeets do like to fling their food about.

You'll need to supervise Tango with your other birds when they do get together. Lorikeets are smaller than Amazons or Eclectus, but they are totally fearless and sometimes that can get them into trouble so you'll need to be mindful of that too.

But it sounds like you have a very good handle on the situation there jousze, and I'm still looking forward to those pics and maybe even a video whenever you are able - please and thank you ;)
