Hi,
Hoping someone can help our little Roger...
Roger (female) approx 35 years old. Started laying eggs 3 years ago (2/3 eggs once per year in Dec). This year she laid 2 eggs. She was perfectly fine through the whole process then a couple of weeks later, literally ovenight all her tail feathers curled up then the next few days they got worse and now all her body feathers are looking tatty. The 2nd morning after her feathers curled I found her on the floor (very unusual) and she had pooped a lot all over the floor.
In the daytime she is her usual interactive self, eating lots and getting upto the usual mischief! but late at night time she acts really strange. She usually sleeps on top of her cage in the lounge, but now she won't go on the cage (night time only). I have tried leaving a light on for her, I've put another stand in the lounge that she could sleep on, I have even tried sleeping in the lounge with her but it's as though she is afraid of something. When I was in there with her she started walking around frantically and picking at her feathers - like extreme pruning. It was like she was trying to run away from her feathers/tail, maybe they were annoying her. She will sleep on the sofa or on the floor but not go on the cage. Then come daytime she is back to her old self. But her feathers are getting worse. Her eyes are normal and nothing wrong with her beak. There isn't a specialist avarian vet near me so I'm hoping someone here has seen this before or can point me in the right direction. I have read is could be a deficiency after laying the eggs so I have started giving her some calcium suppliment. Any advice greatly appreciated! Thanks...
(I have attached some pictures and included one prior so you can see how she usually looks)

Personally I'd treat this as an emergency and have her seen by the avian veterinarian. Burds that go to the floor ilof the Cage to sleep , plus fluffed are very sick usually 24-48 hours from death . In addition to the extras poop mess could indicate straining to get an egg out possibly egg bound.

So for my piece of mind id have to assume the worst abd get them checked out as fast as possible.

On the feathers curling I have no idea.

Keep us updated, I hope your girl will be ok

Agree 100%, this one needs a real avian vet, not a dog and cat or exotic vet. And ASAP. Today if possible, being Sat that might not be in the cards. Book something for Monday by hook or crook. Keep her warm, keep her hydrated. Easy to digest foods.
No excitement. Maybe mist her to keep her skin, minor point.

Fully agree with my good friends above!

There seems to be both emotional and medical issues at play with the medical issues far more important at this point. Treating this as medical emergency (Needing to see a Avian Medical Professional) is the proper reaction.

Added in pictures she seems to be hunched..that can indicate weakness from illness or abdominal pain both extremely serious and indicates life threatening situations.. if true hunched and not standing normally or does this .....plus your other symptoms.

Many of us have to drive hours to visit avian vets. If you do keeping them warm stress free with travel apple slice, and stopping a few minutes to give them a chance to drink or eat as many won't while in motion.

That looks like a sick macaw. Our b&g gets ratty feathers because he doesn’t like to take baths. A good bath and he’s a pretty boy immediately. But being on the bottom of the cage, picking at feathers, all the behaviors you describe can be very serious signs. Sometimes an egg bursts inside the bird and gets infected, sometimes it gets stuck, or it could be something totally unrelated to the egg. But a bird that acts sick or looks off is often at death’s door. Birds have evolved to conceal any sign of illness or injury, because the flock will attack a sick or hurt bird and drive it away. By the time a bird looks sick it is often too late to save them. Don’t ask me how I know.
