Mango flew into a wall

Really, really hard.

When she came down her head was twisting and she was flapping. I held her to make sure she didn't hurt herself.

It's been about 10 minutes and she's very calm, very quiet. She just started eating a couple bites of millet.

Help? The vet is only in on Saturdays, Sundays & sometimes Monday.
I just have her lying on my chest. I feel awful. She just zoomed out of her cage and hit the wall.

Birds do fly into things sometimes, and 99% of the time, they are a little dazed, but fine. Give her a little time to rest inside her cage, then observe her moving around a little to see if she is favoring a wing or foot (signs of injury). Also check for any bleeding. Most small wounds can be treated at home with peroxide to keep infection at bay. IF she is showing a sign of a more serious injury, you get that vet down to the office ASAP on an emergency basis or find a different vet. A broken bone in a parrot is not only a broken bone, but theres a risk of subsequent infection too. That all said, I wouldn't be super concerned, she is most likely just a little dazed and will be back bouncing around again in a few hours

She's very sleepy.

She hit hard, and fell onto her back from high up. I'm just concerned. I'll call the vets and see what they can do. I'd feel awful if she didn't recover.

whatever you do, do NOT add any heat to her environment. i know they say for sick and injured birds to keep them warm, but never do this with head injuries. it can make them worse if there is a concussion or the like.

make sure she is eating and drinking, offer her some sugar free natural fruit juice of any bird safe variety and keep her calm and under close observation. she may be dazed for a few hours, but if she is okay, she should perk up just fine and be back to normal.

keep watch for lethargy, seizures, limping, wings drooping, apparent vision problems, bleeding, swelling, or lack of appetite.

ive had a few collisions with my birds, they were alright, just dazed. tsuka has hit the window hard enough once to take skin off his nare and leave a perfect cockatiel dust print on my window. he was okay, just a little dazed but recovered after an hour or so with no issues. so just keep a very close eye and dont hesitate to go to the vet if you feel the need.

No worries, no heat has been added, I've just kept her close to me.

I have no sugar-free juice... Is apple sauce ok? I think it's all natural. I'll check.

Thank you for the reassurance. I'm going to call the vet now. She's been sleeping for a while - which while it's good for head injuries (or so I've been told), I'm still nervous.

oh my.. she is probably in shock, but I think by tomorrow or later on, she should be back to her perky self. maybe try looking for symptoms of parrot concussions?

Thanks everyone for the info. I looked over the inside of that Holmes Cube I bought. It looks like it's made of really cheap low grade materials. I liked it because it was small. But I'm bringing it back. The little spring on the gizmo inside looks like it will rust or break in no time. Gonna get one of the ones you all have mentioned.

She's began 'singing' (read: deafening me), and eating millet & biting me. Haha.

We made an appt. the usual vet is out /: have an appt. on Monday. If it's severe we can come in on Thursday. Nonetheless a wait. She seems to be acting more like herself.

It's only been a couple hours B.. not quite a day has gone by!

Well she's asleep currently, but aware of her surroundings, and prior to be asleep she was -

Hopping around/running on my back
Preening
Piercing my lip.

I'd say she got a bad bruise and maybe some swelling, if so it's likely gone down as she seems a lot more 'there' prior to before. The neck twisting is what really got me - I thought, and if it happened a million times every time I'd still think this, that she was dying.

she is super cute!!!

though i have to bring this up. you mentioned in another thread that she was displaying to you with wings and tail up... the paper and the sleep tent are likely triggering that. i'd take them away before you wind up with eggs. lovebirds are prone to chronic laying, and from personal experience, its a very frustrating issue to deal with.
