Meet Ayla – A Bird Health Tracking App Inspired by Our Umbrella Cockatoo

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share something personal that turned into something pretty useful.

My fiancée's family adopted an Umbrella Cockatoo named Ayla shortly after she hatched, and my fiancée was only about 6 years old. Sadly, Ayla had to be re-homed when my fiancée was about 18 — but the family that took her in promised they’d give her back when we were ready. 7 years later, they kept their word!

When we got Ayla back, she had developed some tough habits like plucking and chronic egg laying. That’s what inspired me to build Ayla: Bird Health Tracking, a mobile app for iOS that helps bird owners track weight, behavior and egg-laying to spot issues early and stay ahead of problems.

Just wanted to share a quick update on Ayla: Bird Health Tracking since I first posted!

I’ve made some great improvements based on early feedback and our own experience:
AI-generated reports now include more context for clearer, more helpful insights
Diet tracking is now unlocked for all users
Performance has been improved

I just down loaded this last night. I have 4 parrots. May I ask what the pro version has to offer? Also when I go into settings it doesn’t show my email or anything. Just encase I need to change information.

The Pro version includes:
- AI powered reports and recommendations (1 report per bird per 24hrs)
- Notes that are assessed by AI when generating reports
- A calendar with notifications
- A merged chart to see how all your bird's data compares
- More to come!

I just down loaded this last night. I have 4 parrots. May I ask what the pro version has to offer? Also when I go into settings it doesn’t show my email or anything. Just encase I need to change information.

Thank you, I just added my Eclectus parrot, and it’s not a species option. So I turned him into a mustache parakeet for the time being.

Do you plan on listing species specific information? Like how much the parrots should weigh, or how their food intake should be to help people reach goals?

Great question — and thank you for adding your Eclectus! I haven’t added that species to the database yet, but I’ll be updating it today so it appears as an option. Once that’s done, you’ll be able to update the species — just restart the app (no update required).

The app provides suggested weight ranges for adult birds (free for all users), and Pro users also get AI-generated diet suggestions based on species for adult birds.

Also my 4th parrot I put in the wrong weight. When I’m going back in to correct it that app is closing only on that parrot. Sorry I’m just trying to figure out the app.

If you press the edit button you should be able to adjust your bird's current weight and then save.

Whenever I click on Blue my 4th parrot is automatically force closes the entire app. The rest of the parrots I can edit.

Thanks for flagging this! I’ve tested it on a few different devices but haven’t been able to reproduce the issue yet, still looking into it.

Since the app crashes only when tapping on Blue, it’s possible something in that specific profile is triggering the problem. You currently can't delete Blue if its crashing, but I can manually remove Blue for you from my end if you'd like — then you can re-add them and see if the issue is resolved.

Thanks for the screen recording — that definitely shouldn’t be happening. I’ve gone ahead and deleted Blue for you, and hopefully that resolves the issue. Please let me know if it happens again after you re-add him. I’ll also continue trying to reproduce the issue on my end.

I added Blue back, and it’s force closing again it’s when the 4th parrot is added for whatever reason that this is happening.

Great news — I found the issue! The reference data for Blue's species was the only data in the database with age span stored in a different format, which caused the crash. Thank you very much I was already collecting this data so it’s nice to just be able to input it into an app. The only thing if it’s possible to add would be an option to track baths/showers. 2 of my parrots are petrified of water so we don’t do that daily. Sometimes I forget the days I did them.

Everything is working perfect now. The only other thing I can think of to track is sun exposure/being outside. It’s simple for me because I adopted 2 parrots with broken wings so they can’t just fly off.
