We have had Mel for a while now, and while she made quite a bit of progress right away, she seemed to platue for a while. Well the dry spell has ended! When we first got here there was a very particular way in which you were "allowed" to touch her. First, she must be out of her cage. Anything entering the cage, including daily food and water dishes, would be bitten! Hard! Once out of her cage, you had to raise one finger above her hair and say "scritches?" If she fluffed her neck for you, you would be allowed a few seconds of scritches. If not, you better not touch her! She was also a screamer, and VERY nervous.
She has been getting better but today we had some firsts:
-she stepped up IN THE CAGE!!!!! (Yeah I am pretty happy about that one!)
-she flew to a human who is not a member of our family, and landed on her shoulder.
-she allowed me to pet her while she was on my shoulder (to be fair, I just hadn't tried that for fear of the typical "don't take me down *chomp*" reaction of many birds, while she is that close to my face.
-she interacted with another bird without instigating a conflict
She also no longer screams (seriously, like ever!)
New people do not make her nervous (she saw no one but her caretaker for the six months she was with him)
And she is talking to me much more!
She does not fear the dog, even when he sniffs her to see if she is going to drop any more treats
She can navigate the house on the wing and no longer runs into things. She knows where things are and where she wants to be. If left alone too long, you better believe she will find you and fly to you! And when she is bored of you she goes home
She is a far cry from the frightened, dirty, violent bird who first came home to me
