Hi guys I currently have 3 macaws but Conures have piqued my interest. Im gooing to purchase 2 young conures in a few months or so but I wanted to know if I can mix two types if I get them at a young age. One would be a Sun Conure and the other a ?? Even a second Sun is a option although they are loud. Few questions can they be kept outdoors? I live in South Florida so cold weather is not really a major concern for me. Any suggestions?

Yes, they could be kept outdoors.....the only things you would need to protect against would be wild birds flying over/landing on cages & pooping anywhere your birds might be able to contact feces or where the wild birds could drink from your birds' water.....protect from predators, hawks, eagles, racoons, snakes.....protect from thieves.....and.....hurricanes/tornadoes/waterspouts.....

1/4 inch wire mesh will keep snakes out. You need to bury it about a foot deep in addition to covering the lower walls of the aviary.

Thanks! I always considered an outdoor aviary but the snakes always freaked me out!

I wouldnt have them in a Aviary per se but a nice sized oversized cage. I have a few neighbors with Macaws outside. I wouldnt dare but the cage could come in and out. Would a Sun Conure do well with a Jenday? Which combinations would you suggest?

If the two birds choose to perch together & spend time in one or the other's cage, see if they spend the night together...if so, they should be able to be caged together.....just caging a couple of birds together does not always work.....

That is why I would get them very young so that they can acclimate to each other and I would be able to spot problems. I figure if we get them together they will likely bond in a short period of time.

Yes I just saw a massive opossum outside. Thought it was a cat till I got a better look at it. I decided that the cage would be kept inside where they have a army to go throught o hurt the birds lol. 10 minutes in my home and the opposum would gladly leave the house on good terms LOL. But seriously, I wanted to build the Macaws a out door aviary, is there a wire gauge spacing that would allow me to use it for both Macaws and Conures? Out at separate times obviously.:-)

I live in southeast tx. We kept our macaw and yellow napped Amazon outside until one night Seminole the amazon starting calling out..they were encaged on our back porch...I opened the door and turned on the light to find a huge possum on Seminoles side trying to get to her...I got her out quickly and since I couldn't shoot the possum. ...I improvised ..battle ready katana anybody????
Truth be told..I wanted to test the blade anyhow..

The part I don't understand is that there are people on my block with chickens... kept in their yards..out in the open...

Why did this stupid thing go for my birds??????

Since this happened we fully enclosed the back porch..but we also move the birds to the bird garage at night...no exceptions...absolutely no lazy...they'll be fine for a night...stuff...

The bird garage is a 2 car garage with only the birds in it with fans to circulate air.....no cars have ever been in it, no petroleum products or cleaning products allowed...

When mixing species, it's best to keep them same sex so as to prevent hybridization. Sun x Jenday hybrids are known as Sundays. Sun x Nandays are Nansuns. I've seen Nanjen for Jenday x Nanday hybrids. Green cheek x black cap hybrids are known as "Black Forest" hybrids. "Suncheek" would be a great hybrid name for sun x green cheek hybrids, if not for the fact that "suncheek" is already the name of a mutation of green cheek conures!

I don't recommend creating hybrids!

If it was strong enough, you could get away with 1/2" wire mesh for macaws and conures! Some macaws can bend metal cage bars, though... so it may depend on whether or not a macaw could get a good enough bite grip on the wires.

Nyla has a lot of experience building aviaries, and it might be something that she could help you out with? I met her in person not too long ago, and she seems very knowledgeable about what she does!
