Hi everybody. I have a question about my new lovebird. Have had him for about 3 months now. Recently there are a lot of feathers on floor under cage. Also when scratching him feathers come. Also when he is on his perch he looks rough up, puffy. Is this molting and if so how long does it last and how many feathers should i except to be lost?

Thanks,
Mar

I honestly don't think anyone could tell you an exact number of feathers to be lost unless they were doing research on lovebird moulting, haha. But expect him to look a bit disorganized and feathers to litter the floor of his cage. Moulting, on average, should last about a month or so.

I've never personally had feathers come off when giving my birds scritches, so I'm not sure about that and it concerns me a bit. But hopefully someone who has lovebirds can chime in about it. And being puffy always worries me, especially if they're lethargic on top of it. Just to be sure, is he still active, eating well, and are his droppings okay? If so, then it's definitely moulting and no worries! :)

To add onto Dinosrawr...

I can't tell you how many feathers, but I can show you about how many my lovie lost. It has been molting for the past two-ish months, and my bird's feathers have actually come off when I gave it scritches.

Being puffed up all the time is a little concerning though..

Thanks for the replies. When I let him out he is active and eats well, about the same since I got him. His droppings look fine but I am know expert in this. Sometimes when he goes when I have him outside the cage they are watery but I think its more him being nervous when I take him out.
