Monk -quaker parrot
Hello everyone, sadly today I come bearing worries instead of good news. My quaker parrot Fistik has been with me for 2 months now, his cage is big he has toys he likes and gets enough attention every day. He is at least 7-8 hours free every day and is alone maximum for 3-4 hours a day. Today when I came home I saw he plucked 14-15 small feathers mangled under his toy which is a small toy that has ropes in it with , basically a pull the rope out toy, his feathers were mixed with the pulled ropes under and in the toy itself a bit as well, I immediate
Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some insight into a concerning discovery I made today with my Quaker parrot, Fistik. I’ve had him for about two months, and until now, everything has been going great.

The Situation:Today, when I returned home, I found 14–15 small feathers mangled underneath one of his toys. The toy is a "pull-the-rope" style foraging toy. The feathers were mixed in with the rope fibers he had pulled out. I have since removed the toy from his cage.

Fistik’s Environment:

  • Time together: 2 months.
  • Cage/Play: Large cage with plenty of toys. He gets 7–8 hours of out-of-cage time daily.
  • Alone time: He is only alone for a maximum of 3–4 hours a day.
Current Health & Behavior:

  • Feathers: No blood on the feathers; no visible bald spots on his body yet.
  • Condition: His breathing is normal, his appetite is healthy, and his mood seems completely fine.
Is it possible this was a "frustration" pluck, or perhaps he was just over-grooming while playing with that specific toy? Has anyone seen a Quaker react this way to rope toys specifically? Any advice on what to monitor would be greatly appreciated.
ly removed the toy. The feathers are not bloody he has no bald spots his hunger is fine his mood is fine he has no heavy breathing

Welcome. Please post pictures. Molting should also be considered. Depending upon your bird it can be a few. Or you wake up and the cage bottom is covered. Feathers removed for molting can look pristine or mangled. Can you handle your bird? Look for new feathers growing in. These will look like dark needles and are called pin feathers. I have a CAG. A breed that is known for plucking. When she has a heavy molt I become very paranoid. She's tame enough with having her body handled. So I check for those pin feathers. Check Fistik for new feathers. Again welcome.

SO young birds do molt all their feathers, as adult ones come in. SO you notice a bare or less feathered spot? Those are true plucking signs.

Monks Love to mess with wood coffee stirrers or popsicle sticks, give him a big handfull and see what happens.

Yeah the first molt it will look like a bird exploded. At these pictures I'm not to worried. If it gets worse then I would. If you see a bald patch that's when you worry.
