mood swing season?

been away awhile.....work, work,work,work !
I have missed the forum and reading a post here I saw one that is talking about a "grumpy" mac.....a reply said that it is hormonal season for them...... is it the same for all breeds? I have my OWA and am hoping to learn about this before it happens.
He seems to hate anyone/everyone but me. very aggressive with my husband. I think it is jealousy because if he walks by while im holding Sammy he will spread tail feathers and watch his every move with open beak ready to pounce....
don't know about the mating/hormone seasons and behaviors. any help or warning will be welcomed for sure.

I'm surprised no one has answered... I'm wondering this as well! How do you know grumpy parrot, from hormonal? Does it matter where you live to when they go "into season"?

Well. Speaking for my BFA she'll be hitting the hormone stage in march time and it'll last most of our spring time. She's pretty good with me tho, not to much nipping etc.

BUT.... Others sure have to watch out.

Blue also acts like yours to everyone else but me. She'll tolerate dad but if he over does it he get it lol. As for my mum, sister, and brothers it's pure hatred. She attack mum at every opportunity, and it's not pretty. Blues a rehome (I'm her 4th owner) so I don't know if she's had reason for this, but in the 10years that I've had her things haven't changed any.

In some states of the US Amazons may start breeding as early as January/February, yes, but in my neck of the woods (Jersey), Amazons usually don't get hormonal until March/April.

I'm in NC. Can anyone tell me what to look for in Sammy? I don't know his age so I am just going to assume he is old enough , I have been told after 5-7 years is when this should start, but I don't know what will show me if he gets hormonal moody......... Would rather learn here then by nasty bites. Lol...

He is extremely attached to me. More so in the past couple of weeks, he has started flying from his cage and running across the floor to get to me if he thinks I'm leaving. Heart warming as it is to feel so loved, I want to change this a bit. Tone it down a little. I need him to have something to do with other people to. I just wanna stop him from being so aggressive to others. And oh my, it is a crime for anyone to get near me if I am holding him. He spread his tail and turns ready to attack. I hope to change this somehow. Any ideas?

Haha... You won't. I've had blue for 10years. Only last night someone new came in and she was on my shoulder. She went mad. Tail fanned, feathers raised, eyes pinned and swaying. Basically BACK OFF lol. But she does it to my mother and siblings even after all this time. You are his now. He won't want rivals haha.

In terms of what to look for in terms of hormonal stage... Noise I believe will come first. Lots of it. Males are always more vocal just before breeding season.
Something else to look for is 'over emotional' amazons. If they get to the point where they are prancing up and down and displaying they need calming down.... If they aren't and you try and handle him, he could well attack you. Even if he doesn't mean to..... It's called amazon rage haha.

Sometimes you will only learn as it happens. Nips aren't nice but it's sometimes the only way to 'learn' so to speak how your amazon works!!

I have a orange winged.
The only way anyone else can't hold him is when he happens to get to the floor and he will step up to them but I know this is only for the free lift. Lol.
I finally got him to take a actual shower instead of a spray bath too..... He jumps in with me. Lol he is so funny.
By vocal, do ya mean his god awful screaming ? Oh my , if so. Lol its not to bad for me , I am the ability to block it out tor the most part. But it drives my husband bonkers. Lol
I have learned everything I have come to know about Sammy right here on the forum, so again, I wanna say thanks to you all.

I wouldn't stress over hormones, you'll be sure to notice if it becomes "that time of year". In any event, socializing him better will help if hormones do become an issue. You hubby needs to interact with him when your NOT around. If given a choice he will always pick you over others. Becareful not to make it a popularity contest. Maybe find a special treat and only your hubby gives it to him when your not around.

You will know when mating season hits lol the first time I heard Jackie doing his thing I thought someone slipped a chicken in my house!! Hahaha. He would make this clucking noise while doing a side-step dance back and forth...I just watched him and thought what.the.heck??? And then it clicked in my brain- ohhhhhh.... But I couldn't really tell if he had an increase in moodiness because he was **always** moody. Jekyll and Hyde big time lol but most of his attitude was from being stuck in a nasty cage in a back bedroom for years with no real human interaction. Jackie also hated my husband; I was the only person able to even get near him let alone touch him. My husband tried and tried and tried to win him over, but was unsuccessful.

Our fids feed off of our emotions, so if your husband, like mine, is terrified then the bird will use that to their advantage. Your husband needs to spend some quality time with Sammy in order to overcome his fear, and with you out of sight and can't hear you (go shopping or something). Your husband doesn't need to touch or hold Sammy in order to have a positive interaction. He could sit next to Sammy's cage with Sammy inside, and talk to him, read to him, share a snack with him (amazons LOVE food.) and just hang out together. If he does that every day for however long it takes, then he will eventually have a relationship with Sammy.
