Hi I hope someone can shed some light.
My conure hen had had a chick but today she bit it's foot off I have contacted the vets
And have an appointment booked today.
I was just curious as to why she did this.
I have separated the chick from her and now she's in her nest looking for it.

I’ve heard of parent birds doing this to their babies.
I think I read they don’t realize that the baby is something they need to care for? It’s most common in young parent birds, to do things like hurt/kill/neglect the new chicks.

I hope the baby is okay!! Has the bleeding stopped? If it doesn’t very quickly a baby that small will not survive.

We managed to stop the bleeding and took the chick to a bird specialist. Unfortunately the vet said that the chick was already in a bad way it very limp wasn't sitting/standing and struggling to breath. So we had to put it down.

Oh, I’m sorry to hear this, it would probably be best that her eggs are replaced with dummy eggs and the real eggs are placed in an incubator.

She has discarded her eggs she hasn't sat on them for a few days.

About 6 years old. We got her from a rescue centre 5 years ago and was told she around 1 at that point

I'm so sorry for the loss of the baby, how awful.
Some birds just don't make good parents, and it sounds like your girl may be one of them.
I wouldn't allow her to breed again if she were mine, as this may happen again:(

Thanks, what concerns me at the moment is she keeps going back to her nest looking for it. I will be discouraging breeding from now on.
