We are picking up the uhaul at 7am and need to get packing it up (just furniture, all the small stuff has already been taken) ASAP as we need to meet the movers who are helping with a few pieces of heavy furniture up the stairs in the new place at 1pm (new place is a 40 minute drive with moderate traffic). I am wondering if it may be a better idea to disassemble Kiwi's cage tonight and have him sleep in the carrier overnight? This move is different than prior moves in the sense it's not out of state but its also not down the street either. Any ideas on what may be least stressful/irritating for him?

I have no idea re the sleeping arrangement that would be least stressful for Kiwi...but I just wanted to say Good Luck with the move ...hope all goes well :)

Thanks. Since my husband has been working, I have been moving carload after carload over to the new place. Coping with stairs on both ends. I am so sore I can hardly move and my legs look like someone beat them with a hammer from dragging heavy stuff around and banging it into my legs all week:56: I will be so glad when this nightmare situation is over and I may just sleep all day Sunday.

Just my opinion, but if he isn't used to sleeping in the carrier it might stress him out a bit.

He does spend a lot of time in his backpack and naps in there, but he hasn't ever slept overnight in it. He has slept overnight in his old travel cage though and didn't care.

First of all, good luck with the move tomorrow! Sounds like you have gotten quite a bit of stuff over there already, and I hope that tomorrow night you can just get some rest for your poor muscles.

Kiwi may be a bit stressed if you have him sleep in his carrier, but it is only for one night, and will take some stress off of you to have his cage ready to go instead of waiting until morning. I think he will be fine after he gets to the new place.

For you, if you have standard full strength Aspirin 325 with a full glass of water or at least 8 oz at least a half an hour before you go to sleep. With a light breakfast tomorrow morning, repeat. And, tomorrow night the same. Yes, there is the other stuff, but years of travel, trade shows and moving, its old school and it works.

For Kiwi, yes its only one night, but for the sake of his comfort - its worth it. So, my vote is for letting him be in his cage for the night (also see below).

Target leaving by 11:30, it will lets you determine your time line as you load and leaves room for the what if's.

By the way, we always size the cage as moving it assembled. It just makes everything simpler and faster. In addition, you tend not to loss cage stuff. Also, it is already in one piece and you simply place Kiwi in the cage as soon as it is inside. Also, why it's one of the last things on the truck.

Thinking about you all - Safe Move and Best Wishes!

FYI: You could lay a sheet on your couch and lay the cage down on it. Saves the legs and its quicker and faster to load and unload!

Yes agree with Sailboat above - if you can get the cage out the house and back in at the other end in one piece that's what I'd go for for Kiwi's sake. Then he can watch all the tooing and frooing with interest.

Best wishes for a smooth day and no problems.

Hope your move is going smoothly today! Wishing Kiwi and Parronts the best possible transition into your new home.

April, I'm looking forward to updates and I can't wait to see photos of your new place, with your skill at interior design it will feel like home in no time. Sorry about the bumps, bruises, stress and sleepless nights.

Good luck April! I hope everything goes smoothly today, and that you, Joe, and Kiwi will love your new place once you adjust. I can't wait to see how you customize it later too, with all of your creative ideas :). I think the most stressful part for all of you is behind you now!

Joining late, but hope your move was easy as possible. I'll bet whatever sleeping arrangement you made for Kiwi was comfortable!

Thanks everyone. My husband insisted on breaking the cage down, but did so yesterday as we were trying to move. Kiwi did end up sleeping in the carrier last night though. We didn't get done until after 7 and no one (including Kiwi) had eaten since the morning (though we did give him water throughout the day as it was over 100 degrees out:eek:). Lucky duck got to eat pizza and seed as I had 0 desire to make anything more difficult or healthy for anyone;) I just got his cage together and he seems happy. Took him outside this AM and sat him on the railing and he looked around, fluffed up and just hung out for a minute taking in the new scenery. I really don't think he much cares, especially since his house is set up now:)

Good it went OK albeit tiring for you and Kiwi is non-plussed with it all.

Wishing you many years of happiness in your new home.
