I've had my caique for 2 weeks now, and the previous owner didn't know the gender. Well I KNOW NOW. How??

I was playing with him, and then he walked up to my hand and got on top of it and started rubbing his bits on my hand, just like boy birds do when they're mating. Yes, I think my bird just had sex with my hand.

I'm glad I know the gender now, but I feel kind of violated.

Edited to add:

Just to be clear, I pulled my hand away as soon as I realized what was going on.

lmao......

he could have brought you a drink 1st!!!!

i have a female lovebird that does that to her happy hut! both genders masturbate so its not 100% foolproof way of sexing.

Females will do the same thing, bird genders are tricky. I was told that Romeo was a female (previous owners told me that they found an egg in her cage a few years ago). The vet on the other hand is almost certain that Romeo is a male (due to eye color and pubic bone structure) so we sent off a DNA test just to be sure. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for a boy! Probably wont get the results back until Tues, I hate waiting. I would suggest getting the test done as well. If he/she is demonstrating mating behavior then knowing what gender you have will prepare you for potential egg laying problems. If it is a female then, unless you want eggs, you will need to make changes so that you are not unknowingly encouraging egg laying behavior.

The females I've seen masturbate didn't get on TOP of the thing they're doing it with... They'd rub their backs on something the best they could, not their "bits".

I do plan to get the DNA test done though, to be absolutely positive. I definitely don't want any problems.

Hahaha! That's a cheap way of effectively sexing your bird. I payed 35 bucks to get my baby boy sexed. :p
