went and found my first fid today. I.had narrowed.my choices down to a macaw or cockatoo. The macaw was too much for me to handle. He had been in his cage since feb when the wife had died. The husband wanted nothing to do w the bird and it showed. He hated.

We met goldie the citron.crested cockatoo and fell in love right away. She is very patient snd lets anyone handle her but especially took a liking to me. Shes besn super good and is hanging out on my shoulder as i type this. I havent heard a peep yet tho im sure im in for a ride!

Great choice. Now keep her off your shoulder until you know her more. Cockatoos are unpredictable. You got one of the better species however, even a good cockatoo is still a cockatoo. My sulfer has a sadistic sense of humor and even though she's not particularly aggressive, she's not beyond trying to grab my face out of the blue for the pure shock factor. She thinks this is funny and her beak is sharp enough to go through a lip without a whole lot of pressure. Sulfer crests which include citrons can be angels, but their halo is slightly crooked. Never forget that. A scarring bite to the fingers is way easier to forgive than a scarring bite to the face. Give it 6 monts and if she's proven herself exemplary then maybe you can think about giving her limited shoulder privilages.

Ok thanks melissa. Shes seemed to make herself at home and is eating now.

Congratulations on your first fid! Please read all you can on caring for a cockatoo as they can be quite a handful.

Also, I wouldn't let her on our shoulder. She is very loving right now but she is still in the honeymoon stage and is not showing her true colors yet. That loving too on your shoulder could very easily turn into a very bad bite to the face or ear out of nowhere.

(I know this from experience. I had a male too and he was a sweetheart when we got him, my mom let him on her shoulder and everything, one week later, he started to show his true self. Just out of nowhere he reached over and BAM bite her in the side of the head so hard it put a hole in her head right behind her ear. He is still a sweetheart but as most toos do, will bite at random from time to time.)

Ok thanks for the heads up. The previous owner said she was 3 and loved to ride around on your shoulder. She didnt mention any biting incidents. She was in a house w 4 dogs a couple cats.3 other birds and 2 kids and was used to being handled. Time.will tell!
