Parrots
Red Lored Amazon
My little baby (just turned 1) Amazon (male)

His nails are not sharp, he has stone perches and they have forever been blunt, but they are growing curved and I worry about them
They used to be the short slightly curved claws, now they’re round

His beak is the same, he gets brand new wooden toys every two weeks and shred everything to pieces, I work in an industry where I can get hundreds of parrot toys and I get them a lot.

He gets so many wooden toys and has all the proper equipment to keep his nails and been naturally short, why are they growing so much!! How do I stop it!

Attached is a picture of before and two pics of now!

They look pretty good to me. The talons/'claws' are always growing. They look like that to grab toys, food etc. They curve to grab perch which helps shape them. A pic of Nameliss foot. She gets nails done every 4-6 months. Those tips are poking holes in my skin with loose grip signals trim need. It's been just under 3 months and tips are becoming sharp. Nearly time for a nail trim.

If ypu have them cut too short but still not short enough to bleed he may have some trouble perching and climbing securely so I wouldn't trim them unless they got too sharp or curved into complete circles. When and if he does need a trim you really should have a vet or vet tech do it. They are so much better at it than most of us are and you don't want to be the one to be the bad guy in his eyes. If you don't have access to a certified avian vet no worries- any vet can trim a parrot's nails- they do other animals all the time and it's not much different. Make sure they round the tips after they trim so they aren't sharp and don't get snagged on anything.
Enjoy your baby!

Here are my girl’s nails. She was just at the vet last week & had them rounded a bit.

When your bird’s feet are on a flat surface, are the tips of his toes flat, or are the toenails pushing them up off the flat surface?

Like this…see how the tips of Ava’s toes are flat on the table? If the very tips of her toes were being pushed up by her toenails, that would mean they’re a bit long.

It’s a funny one, I haven’t cut his nails, I work with insane amounts of baby parrots but because they’re always <6 months I never get to see them with fu

its hard, the front ones are a tad long but still fine, it’s that back claw that curves round that’s doing it for me, just seems a bit much
