She might grow her feathers back. Lovebirds can sometimes recover from PBFD. I will hope that happens for her, but, although they seem to mean well, having her out and about does put other birds at risk, in addition to people that may handle her and go home and handle their own birds.

Didn't catch that. Since they mention that she is contagious and can't be around other birds, I assumed they were just taking her out on her own. Hopefully they do take proper precautions.

Let me be clear, it's a very hard situation and I believe they are doing what they are doing out of love. However PBFD is spread through dander, etc, and it takes very little to infect. If they go to the pet store that I go to, I can bring the virus home with me even if we aren't there at the same time.

I love this little lovie so much and am so glad she has been given a good life.
I always sanitize everything that comes from a pet shop because you just never know.

I'm a little more sensitive to this kind of thing because birds that I have known personally have died of this disease despite precautions. We recently had a huge outbreak (with sick birds STILL popping up) here in Hawaii, and the pet shop isn't the only risk.

I saying that this little bird should not be loved and cared for? NO! I'm glad she is loved. But as someone who has a flock that is routinely put at risk by owners of PBFD positive birds in my area who do NOT take precautions, it makes me nervous. Nervous and hateful aren't the same thing though.

If birds die from this how is it that this little lovebird is still surviving ?
I am not doubting that it CAN cause death. Is it just a matter of taking extreme care of the sick bird? Does the PBFD differ in severity from case to case? I feel sorry for the poor bird but yes taking it out and around is um.. a poor decision on the part of the owner.

Yes it can and often is deadly. It also weakens the immune system greatly, so the fact that this little one is doing so well is a testament to the care her owners must be taking.

I believe they have gotten help and have the support of veterinary care. This disease isn't curable (though some birds survive it), and in what little looking I have done on this particular bird I believe the owners have gone to every length to give him the best life possible.
