Need help taming sun conure a.s.a.p.

I have a sun conure and he is not very tame at all, he gets spooked if you try to put your hand in the cage (sometimes) but is easy to hand feed otherwise he is a good bird, he doesn't have much of a big cage and he doesn't get to go out of the cage because of my 2 huskies but he has good food and water, he doesn't screech as much as he should which is a concern and sometimes he screeches for no reason.

My 12 y.o. son said to name him Cooper or Sonny or even Tiki. I like Tiki myself.

Now that I actually read the topic and Shane was wrong, it said taming not naming. LOL

I have found this to be very helpful. I seen this link on here before. I haven't tried it just yet. But I will after the bird get's use to sitting with me for a few days.

You will find a lot of useful information on taming your bird. Is it possible to put your dogs in a separate room for a certain amount of time each day to give more out of cage time? I have a dog & I taught him to stay away from the bird. Mr. Precious is out of the cage all day & follows me from room to room.

If your bird is cagebound a lot it would be wise to invest in a larger cage. There are large cages available for sale used all of the time. Welcome

I would try to figure out a way to be able to take him out of the cage every day... Birds that are cagebound often get very nervous or insecure, which makes training much harder. No matter what species of parrot you have, they cannot be kept in a cage all day long. Just my two cents...Hope everything works out.

What is your sun conure's very favorite treat? From this moment on, only give him that treat directly from your hand - and be slow and gentle when you move your hand toward him. As he builds up good association with your hands (from which the Very Special Treat always comes), he'll relax more.

A lot of birds don't like having people "invade" their cage, which they regard as their personal space. Let your bird come out of the cage first before you try to handle him, and if you need to work inside the cage (to change food dishes or toys), do it while your bird is on a stand or play gym. As your bird gets more comfortable around you, his cage aggression may get better - but some birds are just that way, and simply working around the problem is usually the best approach.

And Sun Conures don't need a reason to screech -they just have to announce to the world how gorgeous they are at regular intervals! . Just don't inadvertently encourage screeching by reacting dramatically to it, because parrots love drama. Ignore unwanted screeching completely, reward your bird with loving attention when he's being quiet, and eventually you'll have a quiet conure. (Well, as quiet as conures get, that is! If you own an Aratinga conure, your house is destined to have a certain jungle ambience no matter what you do.)

It would probably work well for the Huskies, too. OP, you might want to swing by a pet store and get a clicker and do some reading up on clicker training - it's a training method that most animals respond really, really well to. It gives you a clear way to say "Yes, that's right!" to your animals; most of the time when animals are causing problems, it's because they just don't understand exactly what it is we're asking them to do, not because they're being deliberately disobedient. Oh, and when it comes to animal training, nothing happens ASAP. I know it's hard because you want your new bird to be perfect right away, but you need to allow the bird to set the pace of your training sessions. Patience and consistency are the keys! If you're consistent, predictable, and kind, it won't be long before your Sun Conure is as tame as can be. It's just a matter of building up trust.

You need to get your bird out of the cage every day and give some one on one attention, even if it's for 20-30 minutes. We also have dogs and our dogs are put in the other room just to be safe. In all honesty, they are TERRIFIED of our conure but I don't want any accidents to happen. They have gotten to the point when they see me get him, they RUN out of the room.

The very best thing you can do is get him out of the cage!! Many birds are also "territorial" of their cage (their home). Although my bird is quite tame, he doesn't like it when I'm messing around with his home and personal property.

Patience, lots of treats, and spend some time with him/her. He/she wants to be with you, please give him an opportunity to do that.
