Hey All, as you know I set out to adopt a CAG, thats still in the works, but in my travels today to the bird expo I was adopted by Joe, a 7 year old Yellow Crowned Amazon, Joes story was sad as many rescue birds stories are, his previous caretaker got married and his new wife didn't want anything to do with Joe, including allowing him to live in the same house with her, he was sadly banished to a small cage and placed in the garage for about 5 months with no interaction other than to be fed and watered, he at least was fed fruits and veggies regularly, some good friends thankfully rescued him from that situation and fostered him for the last couple of months, however the months of solitary confinement didn't serve Joe well as he became very mean and aggresive, who could blame him, anyway I saw poor Joe sitting there all alone at the end of one of the display tables and asked since he was clipped could I pick him up, I was warned repeatedly that he bit, not only bit, but bit viciously, anyone and everyone that had attempted to even open the cage door, just call me a sucker I guess cause I still wanted to at least give it a shot, well low and behold I call him to the door, he walks over to the edge, I say "step up" he does it without hesitation, takes two steps up my arm, places he beak on my forearm and lets me give him scritches on the back of the neck, the two guys that had been fostering him had the jaws drop to the floor, I said do you mind if I take him home?, they said that if I didn't they would hold a gun to my head until I agreed I would, its not often that a bird picks you as it being your new owner, especially one that come to trust no one, so there was absolutly no way I could say no, lets hope the honymoon lasts for me and Joe :)......Pics to follow

INCREDIBLE!!! That's amazing. Kudos to saving, Joe. He seems like he's a good guy already. Can't wait to see pictures of him!

Oh Bobby I am so happy for you and Joe. My first question is are you going to change his name since his background history is not so good. I was thinking about you all day imagining you looking at grey babies. Sometimes things happen for a reason and this reason was Joe. Congradulations big time.

good for you and Joe! I hope he lives up to your initial interaction and we all know you'll do the best possible for the guy!

pics Bobby, pics!
edit: and in the time it took me to write this post, pics ;)

One of these days I'll get the hang of posting pics, had 3 on there but for some reason they loaded side by side instead of stacked on top of each other, gonna work on getting his beak in better shape, a little dry and some sloghing going on, he was vet check and all was fine, but he'll still be going through a 45 day quarantine to be sure.

I haven't seen to many of these, only one other one in person in 30 years and another forum members (Lindsey's)

Wow! Joe is beautiful! Congrats to both of you! It sure is magical when they select you.

Good for you! I love Amazons. They require an experienced owner, so he'll be in good hands.

You know, after seeing how well you care for your fids, I'm really not surprised that Joe picked you in the way that he did. You are perfect for the job and somehow Joe knew that that, he was just waiting for you to come along ;). Such a wonderful story, can't wait to hear more about him over the coming weeks.

Dear Joe,
Did you sit there is the dark isolation those months and imagine the kind of person who could give you hope and joy again. You must have felt your feathers rise when he wandered near the cage. And where everyone else stayed back, fearing your bite, he showed you trust and compassion and opened a door much bigger than the one on the cage. You are one lucky bird, Joe, for you have found someone who will understand if you have a lapse of fear here and there as you work your brain around being safe and valued. Your suffering is over, Joe, for you have found a real home.
Sincerely, Gem and Sam

Congratulations! Who says love at first sight isn't real? I'm so happy for both of you.

Thinking of you and Joe this morning and smiling! Know you're running around a bit more than normal due the quarantine but please find time to keep us in the loop on Joe's adjustment. We all feel a bit like vicarious aunts/uncles.
