Female Red Crowned Amazon; Chiba
Yesterday I went to visit an older "Red Crowned" Amazon (in my previous thread, "Mexican Red Head"). He was not the bird I saw advertised on a website. That bird was obviously in poor conditions. This guy, had it much, much worse. :(
His cage can barely hold him. It's smaller than my Cockatiel's cage! it was very dirty and smelly. There were three dirty perches on the floor of the cage and one small perch hanging out. The food and water dishes were filthy (still had full food and water), and he had ONE small Parakeet mirror toy (which was also filthy). His diet was extremely poor, consisting only of Pretty Bird pellets and peanuts. He is not tame, and bit me twice (didn't break the skin) but I knew that this bird needed me. So I took him and only paid the woman $100. I stopped at Petsmart on the way home to buy some toys, perches, nutri-berries treats, a cuddle bone, and some new food and water dishes.
I have him quarantined in my bedroom, because he definitely looks unhealthy. I wash my hands after touching his cage so that I don't bring any diseases he may have to my 'Tiel.
My first and most important step, is a Vet appointment. I am going to call and try to get get him one this upcoming week. Next step, is a big cage and more toys.
I have tried mixing TOPS with his regular food, hoping he would take to it, but I haven't seen him eating it yet.
His name is Pancho, but I'm going to change it (still thinking about a suitable name). Luckily, it doesn't look like he plucks, and he doesn't appear to be a constant screamer, for I have not heard a loud noise out of him yet. ;)
Honestly, I couldn't have made a better decision. I am so happy that I brought him home. :)

Congratulations and THANK YOU for rescuing him! He will eventually thank you with all the love you could ever hope for!

Please get pics and share with us! (we love pics) and keep us up-dated on your progress with him!

Brittany, Congratulations and thank you for sharing this sweet story. I'm glad you brought the little guy home. I hope you get good news at the first vet visit. I'm looking forward to hear what name you choose and I can't wait to see pics.

Oh that's great! Congrats! Just in time for Christmas!!! Thank you for rescuing him! Can't wait to see pics!!

Almost forgot to add, he was NOT staying with this woman. He was still in the house that his owners moved out of. Nobody was staying there with him. Somebody would check on him twice a day. AND the heat was turned off, so it was freezing inside. All he had to keep him warm was a small space heater and a tiny blanket that sat on the top of his cage.

Here are some photos of him in my bedroom. I know there is still so much improvement to me made with his cage and toys, but it's a start.
I'll be asking lots of questions, so be prepared!

Thank you for taking him! On top of everything else, no heat!!??:eek::eek::eek::eek: What were they thinking?

Oh Brittany, THANK YOU for getting him out of there. That cage is atrocious, I would not even put any of my small guys in there. I cannot wait to see how he thrives under your loving care:) I think you were meant to find him.
Can't wait to hear what you decide on for his name, and fingers crossed that the vet visit goes well:)

Awww...poor baby! I'm so glad you saved him! He's lucky to have found you!!

Every day I become more and more disgusted with how some people treat animals.

Thank you for taking him away from that horrible situation. At last he is in good hands. I hope the vet clears him. Let us know please!

Oh thank you thank you for rescuing him! I know you will treat him like the prince he is! He is very handsome btw! :)

Thank you all so much!! I'm very excited to see how we progress.
I scheduled a vet appointment for Monday at 2:00 p.m.. I will wait to name "him" after I have him DNA sexed, but I've already started searching for both male and female names. :)
I will be needing a larger cage too...what is a good sized cage for an Amazon? I was thinking 36" wide and 24" deep at the very minimum. I would prefer a cage that is larger, but those are more difficult to find at the moment, and usually priced very high.

My 'Zon "Sammy"'s cage is 2' deep, 5' high, and 6' wide, so he has lots of room to move around. He's quite active, and clambers around inside for something to do.

As for adopting your new buddy, congratulations!! You've just given him the best Christmas present of his life!!

Oh! He looks so sweet :). The fact that when he bit you it was just a warning and didn't draw blood is a good sign ;). Congratulations!

I feel so happy for you and him! I can't emagine all the pain he's been through, suffering all day in that cage for so long. I hope you'll take great care of him. Try to get him to the vet ASAP, and get a bigger cage when you have the time/money. One that he can stretch his wings in and fly a bit without the wings hitting the bars. A Playstand will later will be a very good thing to have to keep him happy. Take it step by step, take all the time needed, don't rush things, and use positive training. And he'll be a great tame parrot in no time. Please keep us updated on the progress. :)

Congrats on your new baby. So glad you were able to rescue him.

I have also come across another issue; the bird prefers men...
If my Mom or I are in the room, he sits quietly. If my Dad or boyfriend walk in, he begins to talk and make cute mimicking noises. He stops immediately after they leave the room.
Is there anything I can do to increase the chances of him bonding to me? I feel very jealous, but I know it's not the bird's fault.

I am going to try to get this cage. They emailed me earlier. The bar spacing is 1.25 inches.... too wide?
