Hi,

My boyfriend and I already have a little parrotlet, but when we saw this bird advertised so close to where we live we had to have him. He's a green cheek conure, they had him listed as pineapple, but after a bit of googling I think he might be cinnamon - I could be wrong! We've had him 2 days now.

They said he's around 7 months old, he is ringed and I know which breeder he is from, so I might try to confirm this. They also said the breeder told them he thought the bird is male, and he said he's right 9 out of 10 times, but I don't know how correct this is.

He came with this cage:

Eden Play Gym Top Small Parrot Cage

It looks a decent size for him but if anyone has any differing advice I'd be grateful. He only had one dowel perch and a swing, so I've been out and bought him a large branch perch, a small branch perch, a calcium perch, and a rope perch. Also gotten him a few toys, and removed the cozzzy hut he had, after reading horror stories!

He also came with a box of seed mix, I've ordered pellets, but I was wondering what pellet to seed ratio I should feed him? He loves apples, loves pears, and I'll keep introducing other fruit and veg as I go.

One concern I have is that the people we bought him from were smokers, and smoked around him, I've cleaned his cage from top to bottom to get rid of the smell but he smells of smoke himself! Will the smoke have caused him any long term damage?

As far as he goes himself, he pretty much begs to come out of his cage, will come straight onto your hand, loves sitting on your shoulder. He grooms me, nibbles my ear, gives kisses. He likes to do anything he should, including trying to nibble the tv remote, my laptop keys, my bracelet. He tries to tap things on the ipad screen. He LOVES water, he gets excited when he hears running water, so I put a big dish of water on the floor and he was straight in there!

He will let you stroke his back, but doesn't like being held, and will try to bite. He also sometimes gets nippy if you try to move him and he doesn't want to move. Any tips on how to reduce this?

He is unclipped, and I would like to keep him this was, I love watching him fly! He can say 'what are you doing?', and when he thinks I'm not paying attention he babbles and babbles away, most of it doesn't make sense, but definitely 'speech' noises.

Sorry for the long post, I just want to make sure I'm doing the best for him, so any tips, advice etc. would be much appreciated!

Congrats!! Conures are the best, they're big birds in little bodies. Giving him showers and keeping his cage clean will help change the smell of him from smokey to normal, especially after he starts molting.

I'd keep an eye on his respiration for awhile... the smoking definitely wouldn't have been good for him, but if he's healthy now and you keep up what you're doing I think he should be fine. Maybe take him to the vet for a check up?

About the wing clipping-- Be careful about not doing it, conures are fantastic birds, but they can get moody if they think they don't need you to get around (or so goes my experience), especially if he gets hormonal. Maybe keep him a little trimmed just so instead of circling the room he can get from A to B with a decline. Lots of fruits and veggi's with the pellets!! Use seeds to put in foraging toys. I roll up a bunch of newspaper, fold it and cut the ends to make it frayed, and hide seed in it so my girl needs to hunt for them.

Good luck with your new guy!!

Also: if he nips at you when you try to move him, make him step up a few times from finger to finger, then give him a small treat like a sunflower seed. Makes him realize who's the boss, and positively reinforces the stepping up.

Sounds like a healthy bird! I use Roudybush medium pellets. I substituted them a bit at a time for seed and now use them 100% for the basic food that's always available, supplemented with seeds (Avicakes) and fresh fruit.

I Sarah, welcome to the parrotforums :) - it would be nice to see a picture of your parrotlet and your conure if you can manage it. You should be careful with both of these birds as the parrotlet is tiny, the don't know that and it could well challenge the conure or attack it, and vice versa. Just a little warning to be cautious.

Casper too came with the cursed cigarette smell on his cage/body. I've lived with smokers most of my life as well and know how hard the smell can be to rid of where it has set, so I just pitched the cage and got him a brand new one the same day I brought him home.

Casper loves to shower with me, and we do a couple times a week. That over the course of a few months and a molt and no trace of it now.

I would highly recommend a sand perch for your conures main perch, i havent had to trim petries nails ever since i put in a sand perch.

Seed diets are very unhealthy, about a year ago i couldnt make it to the vet to get her pellets so went to seed for a few months. She started plucking feathers and even now i noticed she has a few bald spots she is hiding (noticed when i took a shower with her the other night). I know your changing off seed just wanted to mention it.

That cage looks good, high quality and not real large but big enough and really cool.

For clipping i am unexperienced but after reading a post here i decided to keep her unclipped after her feathers grew out. I would look into a door covering to keep your conure from flying out. Also when i first got her people told me a window with nothing over it can lead to a bird flying into it and cause severe injury or death, they dont realize it is a closed window.

One treat to try is jalapenos or other hot peppers, they love them.

I dont know how your love bird will get along with your conure but i would get advice before trying. I have heard a couple stories of injuries so i wont let petrie around other birds
