Hello members.

It's been almost 6 years since I kept a parrot and I luckily landed with a grown Male Electus.

I've kept African Grey, Alexandrine, Ringneck in the past but it seems the Electus is completely different from these species.

The Electus I got is more than 2 years old. It talked whilst it was at the pet store and was most definitely hand tamed - seldom caged.

Day 1 - Electus comes home and refuses to step up. It was kept in the travel cage (which was cramped and I did not like to keep it there hence I arranged for a bigger cage). Whilst in the cage it spoke tirelessly without stopping. Everyone was happy. Unfortunately it got out of the cage and in trying to make it step up I did sadly get attacked the first day. However no reactions and we agreed to disagree and part ways and it was kept back in the travel cage for the day. Ate well. Was kept in a secluded part of the house for the night for undisturbed sleep.

Day 2 - The Electus continues to talk sing and chirrup. No problem. Cage changed to a bigger one - very spacious. And the electus finally comes out of the cage and sits on top. No biting like the first day but still no step up. Placed back in the cage after much effort. But the talking reduces, which is fine given that the birds adapting to its surroundings.

Day 3 - A bit of loud squawking noticed - too loud. Ears ringing. But the parrot was let out of the cage. It socialized itself and wanted to step up to my knee. Which it did. The talking stopped. Just occasional loud squawks that sometimes lasted about 5 to 7 seconds.

Day 4 - Extreme socializing. Easy to step up (came up to me for stepping up by walking over from its cage area). But no talking. Only loud irritating squawks if someone leave the main exit or someone new shoes up. Especially my kid. The kid roams about the house with her fingers plugged in her ear - yes its that loud.

Day 5 - Squawking ignored. Becomes occasional / lesser in length. Socializing like a baby and very cuddly -un electus like. Allows petting plus offers some food from its beak (my grey used to do that). But any time I leave the area hysterical squawks that last 5/7 seconds come up. No talking at all.

Its day 6 tomorrow and I do not know how to get rid of the squawking and get it to talk more. The position of the cage has been changed from near the house exit to the side wall. So he has a wall behind with his line of sight not seeing people enter exit the house.

I like the bird - its affectionate, emotional and full of mischief. But this squawking and no talking has seriously caused anxiety. I know it needs time but good advice is welcomed. Basic worrysome question - will it ever talk again and stop yelling.

I hope you realized before you got "it" (no name? And "it's" a male, a "he") that all parrots primarily squawk not talk. I would think so, since you've had parrots in the past. I don't think there's way to make him stop squawking. You're his flock now and parrots call to flock members. Several PF members have male eclectus and perhaps they can help you.
Please post pictures! We LOVE gushing over everyone's babies!
