I picked up a Yellow Nape Amazon yesterday from a rescue in Ohio (I'm in New York) This is not my first parrot - I owned a number of them at one time back in the 80's including a Blue & Gold, African Gray, Senegal, and Yellow Nape but had to sell them off during a divorce. I then had an African Grey for 5 years but she recently passed.

I work with dog rescue so bird seemed the proper avenue for me. Archie is 25 and had one owner all his life. In recent years, he withdrew from her and then began biting. He was termed to me as aggressive. Yesterday and this morning he was all sorts of sweet and I was surprised. Then this afternoon I put my arm in the cage and he actually lunged at me - grabbed on and bit in a number of places. SO, they were right. Now the question is what to do to reverse this behavior and I'm open to suggestions. I also know there's the chance he won't ever be a "cuddly" bird but eventually - and I'm looking at long term, I'd like to be able to have him out of the cage.

Other than a nasty bite, he's a beauty and talkative and has the usual Amazon charm.

I admire your dedication and commitment to saving this fella. I'm new to the forum and being a bird mom, I explored the option of rescue or rehome but I couldn't risk it with a 4.5 year old. So we went with a breeder. I think that Archie is super lucky you found him...so Congratulations to him! He's one lucky fella <3...

Hey Karen and welcome to the forum. It sounds to me like things could be worked out with your new Nape.Your right, he might not ever be a cuddly pet, but don,t be discouraged yet. There are lots of threads about aggression in Zons. You can also look in "communities" and click on "social groups". There's a group called bonding with your amazon, that might have some helpful info also. Look around ,read some threads and ask questions.I'd be glad to help. With your dedication i know you can build a good relationship.

Hi Karen.
I have asked questions of more experienced parrot owners a number of times and have been reminded on several occasions that a bird who has only been with me for a few months hasn't had time to bond, yet.

It took 6 months for our yellow crown to step up to hand. But now he is quite the affectionate guy. The Panama who arrived early January is a lovely guy, but I can't pet him, yet.

There are a couple online groups that can help work with training, but the group here & time could do it, too.

Aggressive birds are great for clicker training...

Some years ago, I acquired a Green Cheek Conure, who was very aggressive... I clicker trained him within the cage, and he learned that the target stick was good (he got treats whenever he bit it).. He ended up being a very cuddly bird...

I would much rather tame an aggressive bird than a timid one...

Hi Karen and welcome. The result will be in propotion of spended time with him. He just have to settle down and bond the I am sure the rest will come automaticly

Love Pictures
Good luck!!
